The Special Cell of Delhi Police carried out raids in 30 locations linked to digital news website NewsClick and some journalists associated with the media company on Tuesday. Activist Teesta Setalvad's house was also searched by the probing officials.

Delhi Police sources said the raids, which started early Tuesday morning, are based on a case registered in August under UAPA and other sections of IPC, including Section 153A (promoting enmity between two groups), 120B (criminal conspiracy).

The officials said the police raids are still underway in some locations in Delhi-NCR. After some of his inputs on the illegal funding, the Special Cell teams conducted the raid.

The police recovered the dump data from the laptops and mobile phones of some journalists of NewsClick. The Special Cell has registered a fresh case and initiated a probe.

Earlier, the central probe agency Enforcement Directorate (ED) had also conducted raids regarding the funding of NewsClick.

In 2021, the Economic Offenses Wing of Delhi Police was the first to file a case regarding illegal funding against NewsClick. The company had allegedly received suspicious funding through Chinese companies. The ED registered a case and started an investigation into the funding case.

However, the High Court had at that time given relief to the promoters of NewsClick from arrest.

Politics around NewsClick

In August 2023, Union Minister Anurag Thakur targeted Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over the Chinese funding issue linked to NewsClick alleging that an anti-India, 'Break India' campaign is being run through the organisation.

"Congress, China and NewsClick are part of an umbilical cord. In Rahul Gandhi's 'Nakli Mohabbat Ki Dukaan' Chinese goods can be seen clearly. His love for China can be seen. They were running an anti-India agenda," he added.
