A deep depression lying 700 km south east of Chennai has intensified into a cyclonic storm and is likely to bring rainfall at many places over Tamil Nadu and Puducherry during the next two days, the weather office said on Friday night.
The storm, named "Ward", is expected to move in north westerly direction towards Tamil Nadu coast, a bulletin issued by the Met office said.
Under the system's influence, rainfall at many places with isolated "heavy" to "very heavy" was likely to occur over coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry from tomorrow, it said.
Winds speed reaching 55-65 kmph are likely to occur off Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coasts, and fishermen are advised not to venture into sea as it would be very rough, it added.
"The deep depression over southwest and adjoining south east Bay of Bengal has moved further northwards and intensified into a cyclonic storm "Ward".
It remained practically stationary and lay centered 550 km off Nagapattinam and 700 km off South-south east of Chennai. The system is likely to move in a northwesterly direction towards Tamil Nadu coast during the next 48 hours," the bulletin said. PTI
