Rajahmundry: Swami Swaroopanandendra Saraswati of Sarada Peetham yesterday demanded that the Union Government should declare cow as a national animal, impose a ban on its slaughter, and stop the religious conversions.
"Some persons are encouraging conversions while some others are encouraging cow slaughter. Cow is a sacred animal for Hindus. Keeping this in view, the Union Government should declare it a national animal," he said.
He also expressed displeasure over `beef festival' which a students' group has planned to organise at the Osmania University in Hyderabad.
He also alleged that the swearing-in ceremonies of Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu and the Prime Minister Narendra Modi were conducted at inauspicious times, and that was why the state and the country faced several problems in the past two years such as the Hudhud cyclone in Andhra Pradesh, problems in Kashmir and the torrential rains in Chennai.
The muhural of foundation laying ceremony of the new capital of Andhra Pradesh too wasn't auspicious, he said.
