Coronavirus Pandemic: 2 new coronavirus cases have been found in Dharavi, Asia's largest slum area situated in Mumbai. This has taken total number of COVID-19 infections in the slum to 5. Maharashtra has accounted for nearly 20 per cent of the country's coronavirus infections and efforts are being undertaken on war-footing to contain the spread of virus.
What makes infections in Dharavi serious is that in a slum, a large number of people live in closely packed hutments in unhygienic conditions. In times when social distancing is being touted to be one of the few ways to contain coronavirus outbreak, infections in slums like Dharavi can have serious consequences.
More than half of Mumbai's population lives in slums. And this is being seen as a major section of society vulnerable to coronavirus infection.
Maharashtra accounts for 573 coronavirus infections out of more 2000 across the country. The state has emerged as a hotspot of COVID-19 infections in the country.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Saturday said that permission will not be granted for any religious, political or sports congregation in the state "till further orders".
