Chandigarh, Oct 23: Congress will contest the assembly elections in Punjab on its own, former chief minister and state party president Amarinder Singh said here on Sunday.
'The elections in Punjab are going to be Congress versus the rest, be it the Akalis, the Bharatita Janata Party (BJP) or splinter groups put together,' Amarinder Singh told reporters at Mohali, 10 km from here. Assembly polls are due in Punjab in Feb-March next year.
'The Congress is strong enough to contest on its own unlike the Akali Dal, which has to depend on the BJP and was searching for BSP (Bahujan Samaj Party) support,' he said.
Amarinder Singh said that officials, especially police officers, who were harassing Congress leaders and workers across Punjab will have to face action once the Congress returns to power in the state.
He said the 'Sanjha Morcha' (Joint Front) of some political parties and groups in the state was of no significance.
'It is as insignificant as the name itself and it will always remain so,' he said.
