Congress appoints Qazi Nizamuddin AICC in-charge of Delhi ahead of polls, replaces Deepak Babaria

In a bid to get battle-ready for the assembly polls due in the capital early next year, the Congress replaced Delhi party chief Deepak Babaria with Qazi Nizamuddin. Nizamuddin got a crown of thorns as Congress drew nil in the last two assembly polls and the grand old party is hoping for a revival.

The Congress on Sunday appointed Qazi Nizamuddin as the AICC in-charge of Delhi, replacing Deepak Babaria ahead of the crucial assembly elections to be held in early 2025.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge also constituted a screening committee for the Delhi Assembly elections. S Meenakshi Natarajan will head the screening committee and Imran Masood and Pradeep Narwal will support her as other members of the panel.

"Hon'ble Congress President has appointed Shri Qazi Mohd Nizamuddin as the AICC In-charge of Delhi with immediate effect. The party appreciates the contributions of Shri Deepak Babaria as the General Secretary In-charge of Delhi. Hon'ble Congress President has also constituted the Screening Committee for the upcoming assembly elections in Delhi, as follows, with immediate effect," a statement released by Congress read.

Eying an electoral revival in Delhi where the party was in power for around 15 years, the Congress made a last-minute overhaul ahead of crucial assembly elections. Congress drew nil in the last two elections in the national capital, showing no sign of growth post-ascendant of Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party in Delhi.

Have offered to resign as Haryana in-charge: Deepak Babaria

Earlier in October, Babaria was in the news after several Haryana Congress leaders blamed Babaria for poll debacle in the state as he was Haryana in-charge for the party. Congress leader captain (retd) Ajay Singh Yadav raised concerns about under-representation of OBCs in the party's Haryana unit and top bodies such as the CWC, while also lashing out at the AICC in-charge of state Babaria over the poor assembly poll showing. Later, Babaria had said he had offered to resign.
