Highlighting the role of media in bringing the laws closer to the masses, he said it should not only do complete but also correct reporting of judgements.
"I have always appreciated the role media plays in bringing the laws closer to the common masses. The responsibility that it owes to the society is enormous and it should not only make complete but correct reporting of judgements so that they can be understood by the people in right perspective," the Chief Justice said while speaking at the function organised by the Supreme Court Bar Association.
"I hope and trust that you, media personnel, will work remembering your duties and not for any private ends, as in your hands lies the daunting task of portraying justice," he added.
Other Supreme Court judges, including Chief Justice designate Rajendra Mal Lodha, were also present at the occasion. Justice Gyan Sudha Misra, who will demit the office on April 27, was also given a farewell.
Speaking at the function, Justice Lodha said, "As the designate Chief Justice of India, I rise to the farewell of 40th CJI and to celebrate a successful judicial career spanning over 18 years. In speaking about Justice Sathasivam, we recall a career that has been stamped by smile, simplicity and subtlety.
"The commitment and energy with which he has taken on and carried out his functions highlight his passion for justice."
