One person was killed and 20 others injured after a speeding car ran over a group of people during the Goddess Durga idol immersion procession at Pathalgaon in Chhattisgarh's Jashpur district on Friday. According to the details, the accident occurred in the Bazarpara area in Pathalgaon.
The deceased man was identified as Gaurav Agrawal (21).
Block Medical Officer James Minj said that at least sixteen people were hospitalised due to the ghastly incident while x-rays confirmed that two of them had suffered fractures, and were being referred to another hospital.
The accused, identified as Bablu Vishwakarma (21) and Shishupal Sahu (26), have been arrested in connection with the incident. Both are residents of Madhya Pradesh and were passing through Chhattisgarh, news agency ANI quoted the Jashpur SP Office as saying.
As per reports, a massive quantity of marijuana was found in the car that ran over the victims.
Terming the incident as "sad and heart-wrenching", Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel said the accused were immediately arrested and action has also been taken against some police officers who were prima facie found at fault.
"The Jashpur incident is very sad and heartbreaking. The culprits were immediately arrested. Prima facie action has also been taken against the police officers who appeared guilty. An inquiry has been ordered. No one will be spared. Justice will be done to all. May God rest the soul of the departed." CM Baghel tweeted.
"I pray for the speedy recovery of the injured," he added.
Senior BJP leader and former chief minister Raman Singh demanded a compensation of Rs 50 lakh for the kin of the deceased and the immediate removal of the Jashpur Police Superintendent.
