New Delhi: Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari on Wednesday said that the government plans to install CCTV surveillance cameras at most of the traffic signals in the country to improve road safety.

"Road safety has become a crucial matter of discussion in the parliament....As part of road safety the government plans to install CCTV cameras at most of the traffic signals in the country," said Gadkari.

He was speaking at the launch of Michelin India-PVR Nest Cineart Steer to Safety Program-2014-16, a road safety campaign for schools children in the national capital.

Under the campaign school children are positioned at the center stage as proactive citizen to advocate the issue of road safety.

Gadkari said that the government has also started 350 e-tolls in the country with electronic toll payment facility which is expected to save Rs. 60,000 crore in fuel bills.

"This is an appreciable effort by Michelin and PVR to take such a unique and innovative efforts for educating school children on the road safety through creative arts such as cinema, theatre and craft," Gadkari said.

Sanjeev Kumar Bijli, JMD PVR and Trustee 'PVR Nest' on the occasion said: "Road safety is a national concern now, and it is a matter of honour that PVR Nest has taken up the responsibility to sensitize the society about the issue."
