The Central Bureau of Investigation on Saturday arrested an Additional Income Tax commissioner of Thane Sumitra Banerjee and her husband Subroto while taking Rs 1.5 crore cash bribe from a builder in Mulund, Mumbai, CBI sources said.
Rishiraj Singh, joint director, CBI, said the I-T official had already taken Rs 20 lakhs from the builder, and her husband had gone to Mulund to collect Rs 1.5 crore. The builder had meanwhile informed the Anti-Corruption Bureau of CBI. As soon as Subroto took hold of the cash, he was nabbed by CBI sleuths, Rishiraj Singh said.
The I-T official had pressurized the builder to pay Rs 25 crore income tax and a deal was struck for paying Rs 4 crore, out of which Rs 2 crore was to have been paid as tax and the remaining half was to have been paid as bribe, Singh revealed.
Singh said, the role of assistant I-T commissioner Anjali Bamboli was also being examined.
