Five people, including four students, were killed when a floor of a building collapsed in the city's Bhajanpura area on Saturday. An under-construction coaching center was being run in the building.
The Fire Department received a call around 4.30 pm, following which seven fire tenders were rushed to the spot, the official said, adding that rescue operations are underway.
Meanwhile, BJP MP Manoj Tiwari visited the Bhajanpura area to meet the victims and inspect the situation. Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal has also reached the spot to inspect the situation. He said: "This accident happened because of MCD. I will take permission from EC to provide monetary help to the victims."
Anil Baijal, Lieutenant Governor of Delhi said: "Deeply saddened to learn of the tragic deaths including those of innocent children during the building collapse in Bhajanpura, East Delhi. May God give strength to their family and loved ones to deal with this tragedy."
"Have directed all concerned to provide all possible support for the speedy recovery of the injured. Action will be taken against those found guilty of lapses which led to this tragic accident," he added.
