    GST Council sets up GoM on compensation cess; panel to submit report by Dec 31

    The Goods and Services Tax (GST) Council has set up a 10-member GoM, chaired by Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary, to decide on the taxation of luxury, sin and demerit goods once the compensation cess ends in March 2026. The Group of Ministers (GoM), which includes members from Assam, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal, will submit its report to the Council by December 31.

    CEO of a herbal healthcare company among six arrested for Alprazolam trade

    Six people, including the CEO of a herbal healthcare company, have been arrested for allegedly manufacturing and supplying Alprazolam, a psychotropic substance, in the Delhi-NCR region, police said. The drug was allegedly manufactured in a unit of Biocase Foods and Extracts Pvt. Ltd in Hisar, Haryana, which is owned by Dr Naveen Aggarwal. He is a recipient of the Indian Achiever's Award and was given the 'CEO of the year' award last year, police said.

    West Bengal launches control room for uninterrupted power supply during Pujas

    To ensure an uninterrupted power supply during the Durga Puja festival in the second week of October, the West Bengal government launched a 24x7 Puja control room and a dedicated WhatsApp service. The initiative was inaugurated by State Power Minister Aroop Biswas here on Thursday. The control room will operate throughout the festival period, extending until Jagaddhatri Puja in November second week.

    Heavy rain in Sikkim triggers multiple landslides, bridge damaged

    Heavy rains in Sikkim over the last three days have triggered multiple landslides in several areas and caused significant damage to the old Rang-Rang bridge, considered the gateway to the northern part of the state, officials said. With the bridge down, Mangan district headquarters is cut off from the rest of the state. The alternative route via Dzongu is also blocked due to damage to Sankhalang bridge last year. The district administration is currently assessing the damage and working to restore connectivity as soon as possible, they said.

    PM Modi to inaugurate Pune Metro online on September 29

    Prime Minister Narendra Modi will virtually inaugurate the Metro line between Shivajinagar District Court and Swargate in Pune on September 29 (Sunday), local MP and Union minister Murlidhar Mohol has said. Besides inaugurating the corridor, PM Modi will also lay the foundation of the Swargate-Katraj Metro stretch on Sunday, said the Minister of State for Civil Aviation and Cooperation.

    Israel intercepts missile from Yemen; rejects ceasefire with Hezbollah

    The Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) claimed that the advanced "Arrow" Aerial Defense System of the country successfully intercepted a missile fired from Yemen. Sharing a post on X, the IDF said, "A missile was fired from Yemen towards Israel and successfully intercepted by the "Arrow" Aerial Defense System." "Sirens and explosions were heard following the interception and falling shrapnel," the post added.

    NIA arrests key ULFA suspect in planting IEDs across Assam

    The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has arrested a key accused in a United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I) case related to the planting of IEDs across multiple places in Assam. Girish Barua, alias Gautam Baruah, was nabbed from the outskirts of Bengaluru, where he was hiding out, said the NIA in a press release.

    Delhi: MCD Commissioner issues order for conducting Standing Committee member election today

    MCD Commissioner Ashwani Kumar has issued an order for conducting the Standing Committee member election on September 27 at 1 pm. The order of the MCD said that the election for the lone vacancy in the Standing Committee by the Corporation was scheduled for September 26 at 2:00 pm; whereas, the said election was not conducted and the meeting was adjourned to October 5 by the Mayor Shelly Oberoi on the specious ground that the Councillors be allowed to carry mobile phones inside the voting hall/polling booth.
