Win for Google as top EU court says search giant need not apply 'right to be forgotten' worldwide

This Nov. 1, 2018, file photo shows a photo of the Google logo at their offices in Granary Square, London. The European Court of Justice's ruled Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2019, that there is no obligation under EU law, for a search engine operator to extend beyond the EU member states the court's 2014 ruling that people have the right to control what appears when their name is searched online.

Google does not have to remove links to sensitive personal data globally, the European Union's top court has ruled in its order on Tuesday.

Court was hearing a case between the Google and French privacy regulators.

What is the case between Google and French privacy watchdog

France's privacy watchdog Commission Nationale de l'informatique et des libertés (CNIL) in 2016 fined Google $1,09,914 for refusing to remove sensitive info from Google Search results worldwide upon request. It called it a person's "right to be forgotten". Google had challenged the order.

Today's order by the European Court of Justice

The judges from the European Court of Justice today gave its verdict in favour of Google on how to execute its 2014 ruling by the same court which granted the right for individuals, under certain conditions. Earlier, the court had ruled that Google would have to remove references from search engine results worldwide if the individual invokes "right to be forgotten".

On Tuesday, European Court of Justice ruled that the "right to be forgotten" would be seen only on European versions of the Google search page - google.fr or google.ie, say - but not on google.com or other domains outside the EU
