Pak court extends by 7 days Maryam's remand period in graft case
An accountability court in Pakistan has extended by seven days the remand of Maryam Nawaz, the daughter of jailed former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, for interrogation in a corruption case, according to a media report.
Maryam, 45, the Vice President of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz, is in the National Accountability Bureau's custody since August 8 in connection with the Chaudhry Sugar Mills (CSM) case.

SC refuses to keep in abeyance NBW issued against jail superintendent
The Supreme Court on Thursday refused to keep in abeyance the non-bailable warrant (NBW) issued against the superintendent of district jail of Gautam Buddh Nagar in Uttar Pradesh for releasing an accused from prison despite the apex court order cancelling his bail.
The matter was mentioned before a bench comprising Justices N V Ramana and Ajay Rastogi and the counsel appearing for the jail superintendent said the officer would appear before the court on September 23 as directed by the top court, but the NBW should be kept in abeyance till then.
"Let him come (before the court)," the bench said.
The lawyer, while saying that the superintendent had committed a mistake, again urged that the NBW be kept in abeyance.

Ayodhya: SC closes contempt case against man for threatening advocate representing Muslim parties
The Supreme Court on Thursday closed a contempt case against an 88-year old retired public servant for writing objectionable letters to senior advocate Rajeev Dhavan for appearing for Muslim parties in the Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid land dispute matter.
A five-judge bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi said the man had expressed regret for using such objectionable words in his communication to Dhavan.
The bench also comprising justices SA Bobde, DY Chandrachud, Ashok Bhushan and S Abdul Nazeer said there should not be a repetition of such acts again.
Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for Dhavan, said he does want any punishment for the retired public servant but a message should be sent to all in the country that there should not be any intimidation of any counsel appearing for any party.

BJP slams DMK for its stance on Hindi
The BJP has slammed DMK for its stance on Hindi, saying if the regional party was so strongly against this language, the schools owned by its functionaries should not have CBSE syllabus as Hindi is taught in that.

Scientists are analysing the images taken under harsh light conditions by the NASA Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) Camera of the area where the Vikram moon lander is likely to have touched down on the moon and it may be a while before they can locate it, project experts have said.
LRO project scientist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, Noah Petro, said on Wednesday that they were now analysing the images taken on Tuesday "and we will make a statement at some point when we can identify the lander."

Office-goers face difficulties due to transport strike in Delhi-NCR
Office-goers faced difficulties in reaching their workplaces on Thursday morning as several private buses, taxis and autorickshaws remained off the roads due to a strike called by the UFTA against the amended MV Act provisions. Many schools in the national capital remained closed due to the strike.
The services of Delhi Metro and Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) buses remained unaffected.
United Front of Transport Associations (UFTA) general secretary Shyamlal Gola said over 50 transport associations and unions in Delhi-NCR were taking part in the strike.

29 booked for mid day meal scam in Uttar Pradesh
Nearly 29 persons have been booked for a massive scam in the mid day meal (MDM) scheme in three districts of Uttar Pradesh -- Rae Bareli, Kannauj and Pratapgarh -- where food grain meant for school children was being sold in the open market.
Seventeen Anganwadi workers and four supervisors of Pratapgarh were suspended after raids led to the recovery of large quantities of food grain meant for the scheme in the warehouse of a private trader in Rae Bareli.

Sensex drops over 200 pts; ICICI Bank, TCS top laggards
Domestic equity benchmark BSE Sensex dropped over 200 points in early session on Thursday, dragged by losses in index heavyweights Yes Bank, TCS and Infosys, amid unabated foreign fund outflow and mixed global cues. The 30-share index was trading 206.33 points, or 0.56 per cent, lower at 36,357.55 at 0930 hours, while the broader Nifty slipped 64.65 points, or 0.60 per cent, to 10,776.
In the previous session, the BSE barometer ended 82.79 points, or 0.23 per cent, higher at 36,563.88. Similarly, the broader NSE Nifty gained 23.05 points, or 0.21 per cent, to finish at 10,840.65.

Trump revokes California's authority to set emission rules
The White House has stripped the US state of California of its right to set its own vehicle emissions standards and banned other states from setting similar rules.
"The Trump Administration is revoking California's Federal Waiver on emissions in order to produce far less expensive cars for the consumer, while at the same time making the cars substantially SAFER," US President Donald Trump wrote on Twitter on Wednesday.
California has already taken steps to block the administration's efforts.

Madhya Pradesh seeks Rs 11,861 cr flood relief package
The Madhya Pradesh government has sought a financial package of Rs 11,861 crore from the Central government for relief and rehabilitation work in the flood-affected areas of 36 districts in the state.
The Minister said that the damage caused to crops is estimated at around Rs 9,600 crore while the roads have suffered damage to the tune of Rs 1,566 crore.

2 killed, 4 injured in Mogadishu car bombing
At least two persons were killed and four others injured on Wednesday evening in a car bomb blast in Somalia's capital Mogadishu, police and witnesses said. A car parked near a new restaurant along the city's Maka Al-Mukarama road exploded and caused casualties and damage.
"We can confirm that two people were killed in the blast and four others injured. The death toll may rise as many people were inside the restaurant," a police officer said.

Delhi police constable driving car without licence, PUC, disciplinary action launched
A Delhi Police constable was found driving a car without insurance, PUC certificate and with tinted windows, following which he was challaned and disciplinary action was initiated against him.
On Tuesday, a man and a woman approached a zonal officer deployed at Mori Gate red light and alleged that a Hyundai Accent, with a Delhi registration number and black tinted windows, was parked near the traffic signal.
They also informed the officer that the car belonged to Constable Vishal Dabas as they had seen him opening the car door. He was challaned under the provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act for not having an insurance and Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificate.

IMD forecasts extremely heavy rainfall in Mumbai for today
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red rain alert, indicating "extremely heavy rainfall", for Mumbai and Raigad districts. This indicates precipitation of more than 204 mm in 24 hours starting Thursday morning.
However, Mumbai would receive heavy rainfall on Friday, but Raigad will continue to receive extremely heavy showers that day also, an official said.
