The BJP legislative party staged a protest on the staircase of the West Bengal legislative assembly on Monday to counter the ruling TMC's protest programmes in New Delhi against the alleged withholding of state dues by the Centre. India has logged 36 new coronavirus infections while the active cases have been recorded at 431, according to the Union Health Ministry data updated on Monday. The death toll has been recorded at 5,32,032, the data updated at 8 am stated.  The country's Covid case tally is 4.49 crore (4,49,98,874).  

Security forces on Monday launched a search operation in the forest area of Kalakote in Jammu and Kashmir’s Rajouri district following information about suspicious movement, officials said. The Army along with police cordoned off Broh and Soom forest belt in Kalakote area for the searches, the officials said.

Meta-owned WhatsApp banned 74 lakh accounts in August, keeping in line with IT rules, according to the latest India monthly report by the messaging platform. Of these, 35 lakh accounts were proactively banned, before any reports from users.

At least eight people were killed including one in Ranchi due to heavy rain and lightning strikes in Jharkhand in the last 24 hours, an official said on Monday. Parts of Jharkhand have been receiving incessant rains since Saturday evening with several spells of heavy rains, which damaged several culverts, diversions and also claimed several lives.

Heavy rains continued to lash several parts of Kerala affecting normal life on Monday. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert in three districts-Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha and Ernakulam. A yellow alert predicts heavy rainfall between 6 cm and 11 cm. The IMD has predicted rains till October 5.

State-owned CIL on Monday reported a 12.6 per cent year-on-year rise in coal production to 51.4 million tonnes (MT) last month. The PSU had produced 45.7 MT of coal in the year-ago period, Coal India Ltd (CIL) said in a BSE filing.

Three sisters were found dead inside a trunk in their house in Kanpur village of Jalandhar district, police said on Monday. The three girls were reported missing Sunday night at Maqsudan Police Station by their parents when they did not find them home after returning from work, an officer said.
