    West Bengal: Local TMC leader shot dead in Jagaddal, 1 held

    West Bengal Police arrested one person in connection to the murder of a local TMC leader in Jagddal today. Ashok Shaw, a former TMC president of Bhatpara Ward No 12, was shot multiple times when he was standing in front of a tea stall, a few hundred metres away from the Jagaddal police station in North 24 Parganas district. Crude bombs were also hurled simultaneously, targetting him.

    Bihar bypolls: 9.53 pc voter turnout till 9 AM in 4 assembly seats

    A voter turnout of 9.53 per cent was registered till 9 AM on Wednesday in the by-elections to Tarari, Imamganj, Belaganj and Ramgarh assembly seats in Bihar on Wednesday, an official said.  According to the Election Commission data, Ramgarh witnessed 11.35 per cent turnout of voters till 9 am, followed by Belaganj at 9.12 per cent, Tarari at 9.3 per cent, Imamganj at 8.46 per cent. All four assembly seats had fallen vacant after MLAs representing them were elected in the last Lok Sabha election. More than 12 lakh voters will decide the fate of 38 candidates in these four assembly seats.

     A voter turnout of 17.86 per cent was recorded in Vijaypur and 16.90 per cent in Budhni till 9 am as polling was underway on Wednesday for byelections to the two assembly seats in Madhya Pradesh, a poll official said. The bypoll to Vijaypur in Sheopur district was necessitated after sitting Congress MLA Ramniwas Rawat joined the BJP. He is currently a minister in the Mohan Yadav cabinet. The Budhni bypoll was required as sitting MLA and former chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan was elected to the Lok Sabha earlier this year.

    An estimated overall 10.14 per cent voter turnout was recorded during the first two hours, since the voting began for by-polls to three Assembly segments in Karnataka on Wednesday, election officials said.     Nearly 13 per cent of 9.1 lakh electors cast their votes in the first two hours of polling on Wednesday during by-elections to five assembly constituencies in Assam, according to official data. According to the Election Commission, approximately 12.55 per cent of 9,09,057 electors, including 4,54,963 women and 19 third gender, exercised their franchise in the first two hours till 9 AM to decide the fate of 34 candidates. There are also 2,617 service voters in these five constituencies, where polling is taking place as per pre-delimitation data, an official said. Bypolls are taking place in Dholai (SC), Sidli (ST), Bongaigaon, Behali and Samaguri assembly constituencies as these seats fell vacant with the representatives of them winning the recent Lok Sabha elections.
