    Two held for murdering cousin in Delhi's Ghazipur

    The Delhi Police has apprehended two persons for murdering their cousin in the Ghazipur area of the national capital, an official said on Monday. The accused were identified as Akash, 20, a resident of Ghazipur village and Vishal, 22, a resident of Gharoli Extn., Delhi.

    According to the official, the incident took place around 1.30-2 a.m. on the intervening night of February 6-7. "A PCR call was received at Gazipur police station in which caller Sudhir informed that his brother Sunil Kumar, 40, sustained a bullet injury on the right side of head fired by the accused cousins," DCP (East) Priyanka Kashyap said. A police team immediately rushed to the spot and the injured Sunil was taken to Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital where he was declared 'brought dead'.

    Gunfight breaks out at J&K's Awantipore

    An encounter has started between terrorists and security forces at Awatipore in Jammu and Kashmir's Pulwama district, officials said on Monday.

    "Encounter has started at Nambal area of Awantipora. Awantipora police on job," police said.

    'Don't harass petitioners': SC to Tripura Police on sending notice despite its order

    The Supreme Court Monday pulled up the Tripura Police for sending notice to people for posts on social media over the alleged communal violence, despite its interim order restraining the state authorities.

    A bench of Justices D.Y. Chandrachud and Surya Kant told the counsel representing the state government that if Tripura Police continues to harass people, then the court will summon the Home Secretary and the Superintendent of Police concerned.

    Indian fishermen released by SL court to be shifted to detention centre

    The 56 Indian fishermen from Tamil Nadu who were released by a Sri Lankan court will be shifted to a detention centre on Monday following the completion of their quarantine period. Since the fishermen were released on January 25, they have been under quarantine after few had tested positive for Covid-19. Sri Lankan Prison authority sources told IANS that they would be moved to an immigration centre on Monday.

    EAM Jaishankar holds talks with Sri Lankan counterpart

    External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Monday held extensive talks with his visiting Sri Lankan counterpart GL Peiris, covering almost all facets of bilateral ties. The talks came days after India extended a USD 500 million credit line to the island nation. Peiris arrived in Delhi on Sunday on a three-day official visit. "Very pleased to welcome FM G.L. Peiris of Sri Lanka. Looking forward to our talks this morning," Jaishankar tweeted. 

    India on Wednesday extended the credit line to Sri Lanka to help it purchase petroleum products. Sri Lanka has been reeling under a severe foreign exchange and energy crisis. India's assistance of USD 500 million (one million is equal to Rs 10 lakh) to Colombo came over two weeks after a virtual meeting between Jaishankar and Sri Lanka's Finance Minister Basil Rajapaksa on January 15.

    Dera Sacha Sauda chief granted 21-day furlough

    Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, who is lodged in Sunaria jail in Haryana's Rohtak district, was granted a three-week furlough on Monday, officials said. Singh has been granted a 21-day furlough by the state's jail administration. Last year too, the Dera chief had been given emergency parole from sunrise to sunset to meet his ailing mother. He had also come out of jail on a couple of occasions on health grounds.

    12-year-old Kolkata boy dies trying to recreate scene from anime series

    A 12-year-old boy, in a bid to recreate a scene from an anime series, allegedly jumped off the terrace of a high-rise building in the city's Phoolbagan area and died, a police officer said on Monday. Biraj Pachisia, a class V student of a reputed city-based school, was declared "brought dead" on being taken to a nearby nursing home, the officer said. "The boy jumped off the terrace of an 11-storey residential building on Saturday. There are several injury marks on his body. Doctors at a private nursing home stated that he died due to the fall. We are waiting for the post-mortem report. "Initial probe suggests that he was hooked to an anime series and wanted to imitate its hero. We have, however, not reached any conclusion. The investigation is underway," the officer added.

    Seven Army personnel hit by avalanche in Arunachal Pradesh

    Seven Indian Army personnel are reported to have been struck by an avalanche in the high altitude area of Kameng sector in Arunachal Pradesh and search and rescue operations are underway to trace them, official sources said on Monday. They said the Army personnel were part of a patrolling team and were hit by the avalanche on Sunday. "Search and rescue operations are currently underway. Specialised teams have been airlifted to assist in rescue operations," said a source. "The area has been witnessing inclement weather with heavy snowfall since the last few days," it said.

    Karnataka: Two men held for flashing knives during student protest over hijab row

    Two persons were arrested on charges of brandishing knives during the hijab-saffron shawl protest by students at Kundapur town in Udupi. They were arrested near the government pre-university college on a tip-off that five people arrived at the spot with lethal weapons to create communal tension on Friday, police sources said. The accused have been identified as Abdul Majeed (32) and Rajab (41), both hailing from Gangolli in Kundapur taluk. Police are on the lookout for three other persons suspected to be involved in the case. Majeed is an accused in seven criminal cases while Rajab has one case pending against him at Gangolli police station. A case has been registered against them at the Kundapur police station under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, the sources said.

    Man killed by his cousins in east Delhi

    A 40-year-old man was allegedly murdered by his cousins in east Delhi's Ghazipur area, the police said on Monday. As per the police, a call was received from Sudhir, the brother of deceased Sunil Kumar, informing them about the incident. "A PCR call was received in PS Ghazipur in which caller Sudhir informed that his brother Sunil Kumar, sustained a bullet injury on his right side of the head," Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) Priyanka Kashyap said. The accused have been identified as the victim's cousins who are identified as Akash, the son of the deceased's maternal aunt and Vishal, who is the son of the deceased's maternal uncle, the DCP East said.

    Nine killed after car-truck collision in Andhra Pradesh

    Nine people died after a collision between a car and a lorry at Budagavi village of Andhra Pradesh's Anantapuram district. According to Venkata Swamy, Sub Inspector of police, Uravakonda Police Station, the car was carrying a total of nine passengers including the driver. The incident took place on Sunday. "The victims were returning to Nimmagallu. The police have registered a case and further investigation is underway," said Venkata Swamy.
    The police said the truck was travelling at a high speed when it lost control and rammed into the car coming from the opposite direction.

    Maharashtra ATS seizes heroin worth Rs 5 crores, 2 held

    Two drug peddlers were arrested and heroin worth Rs 5 crores were seized from the Vasai area in Palghar during the search operation carried out by Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) in Maharashtra. "The team received information that drug trafficking was taking place in Pelhare village in the Vasai area of Palghar district, after which 1 kg and 724 grams of heroin drugs were recovered by raiding the place along with Rs 2,60,000 cash, and 2 mobile phones," said ATS on Sunday.

    Scrap godown gutted in fire in Thane; none hurt

    A fire broke out in a scrap godown here in Maharashtra on Monday and completely destroyed the premises, but there was no report of any casualty, a fire brigade official said. The blaze erupted around 4.45 am in the warehouse located at Khokha compound in Bhiwandi town, he said. Four fire engines were rushed to the spot and the blaze was brought under control after nearly three hours, the official said, adding that cooling operations were currently underway. "There is no report of any injury so far," he said. The cause of the fire is not yet known, he said.

    IP University, JNU to resume offline classes from today

    The Delhi government-run Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University and the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) on Sunday issued orders directing resumption of offline classes from February 7. The order issued by the JNU stated that the university shall be made fully functional at 100 per cent strength, and all staff members and officers are to attend office on all working days from Monday onwards.

    Injured tiger brought to Nagpur on Jan 25 dies in treatment centre

     An injured tiger that was tranquilized and brought to Nagpur from Paoni forest on January 25 died at the Gorewada transit treatment centre on Sunday, an official said. The tiger was brought to Gorewada transit treatment centre in an injured condition from compartment 420 of Paoni forest range, he said, adding that the big cat was cremated as per forest department rules
