Myanmar militant among 5 arrested in Mizoram, arms seized
At least five people, including a leader of Chin National Front (CNF), an insurgent group based in Myanmar, were arrested in west Mizoram's Mamit district on Wednesday, police said. They were apprehended near the India-Bangladesh border after arms and ammunition were recovered from their possession, a police statement said.
Six AK-47 rifles, 10,050 cartridges and 13 magazines were recovered from the five during an operation by the state police in partnership with an intelligence agency on the outskirts of Saithah village within West Phaileng police station limits, it said.

Sarpanch was murdered as he came in way of extortion; Karad was in touch with killers: SIT
Santosh Deshmukh was killed because he was thought to be an obstacle in a plan to extort Rs 2 crore from an energy firm, and Walmik Karad was in contact with his killers when the crime was executed, a Special Investigation Team of Maharashtra Police told a court at Beed on Wednesday.
The special court for Maharashtra Control of Organized Crime Act (MCOCA) at Beed subsequently remanded Karad, an associate of NCP leader and Maharashtra minister Dhananjay Munde, in the SIT's custody for seven days.

The Jammu and Kashmir Congress will take out a march here on January 18 to protest against Union Home Minister Amit Shah's remarks on B R Ambedkar. 8-10 crore devotees expected on Mauni Amavasya: CM Yogi
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has said that the government is expecting 8-10 crore devotees in Mahakumbh on Mauni Amavasya. The Chief Minister reviewed the arrangements for three days of Mahakumbh. CM directed to coordinate with the railways to ensure continuous and timely operation of trains and improve mobile networks.
Power and water supply should continue 24×7 in every sector, ghats should be barricaded, CM said. Meanwhile, he also instructed that buses should run from every district. Moreover, e-buses, shuttle buses should continue to run continuously in Prayagraj, said CM

Mayawati gets 'supreme' relief in memorials scam case
The Supreme Court settled the PIL filed against Mayawati for spending crores of rupees from the government treasury during her tenure as Chief Minister to make statues of herself and her party's symbol, the elephant.
The Supreme Court has stopped hearing on the petition filed against Mayawati. The hearing was stopped considering the petition filed 15 years ago as an old case.
Supreme Court lawyer Ravi Kant had filed a petition in 2009 demanding that the public money that has been misused be recovered from the Bahujan Samaj Party and since the party's symbol, the elephant, has been made in parks using public money, the Supreme Court should order the Election Commission to confiscate BSP's election symbol.

Man killed after falling while flying kite, 3 injured by 'manja' in Nagpur
A 22-year-old man died after falling from a building while flying a kite, while three other persons were injured by the kite strings in separate incidents in Maharashtra's Nagpur city, police said on Wednesday. A woman, who was among the injured, suffered disfiguring cuts to her face due to the sharp 'manja' (kite string), they said. The incidents took place during the Makar Sankranti celebrations on Tuesday.

Parliamentary panel should question Meta on fact-check, guidelines on hate speech: TMC MP
If Meta executives are summoned by the Parliamentary standing committee on communications and information technology, they should be questioned about the company's decision to stop fact-checking and changes in its content guidelines on hate speech and disinformation, panel member and TMC MP Saket Gokhale said on Wednesday. Gokhale's remarks come a day after BJP MP Nishikant Dubey, who heads the panel, said the committee will summon executives from social media giant Meta for "tarnishing" India's image amid a controversy over its CEO Mark Zuckerberg's statement during a podcast that after the COVID-19 pandemic, most incumbent governments, including the one in India, lost elections in 2024.

Dense fog shrouds Delhi; flights, trains delayed
Dense fog blanketed parts of the national capital on Wednesday morning, reducing visibility and disrupting over 100 flights and 26 trains. The minimum temperature dropped to 6 degrees Celsius, 1.4 notches below normal, as the city experienced another chilly morning. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported minimum visibility of 200 metres in moderate fog with calm winds at Safdarjung and 150 metres in dense fog with calm winds at Palam around 5:30 am.

No decision taken for suspension of services of East-West Metro for installation of CBTC: Official
The Metro Railway Kolkata said that no decision has been finalised for the shutdown of the entire 16.6 km long East-West Metro corridor for installation of the Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) signalling system. It said that the implementing agency Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (KMRCL) has recommended a 45-day block for linking the Sealdah-Esplanade stretch of the East-West corridor.

Bengal CID begins probe into administration of 'expired' intravenous fluid to patients
The West Bengal CID quizzed a senior doctor and junior medics who were on duty at the gynaecology department of a state-run hospital, where a woman died and three others fell critically ill after childbirth, following the administration of alleged expired intravenous fluid. Senior officers of the CID reached the Medinipur Medical College and Hospital in Paschim Medinipore district on Tuesday and questioned the RMO, two junior medics and four nurses who were on duty at the gynaecology department on the night of January 9 when the incident took place, an official said.

South Korean law enforcement officers detain impeached President Yoon
South Korea's anti-corruption agency says impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol has been detained hours after the hundreds of the agency's investigators and police officers arrived at his presidential compound to apprehend him. A series of black SUVs, some equipped with sirens, were seen leaving the presidential compound with police escorts. Hundreds of law enforcement officers early on Wednesday entered the residential compound of the impeached president in their second attempt to detain him over his imposition of martial law last month.

UAE announces launch of MBZ-SAT satellite
The UAE's Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre has announced the successful launch of MBZ-SAT, the region's "most advanced satellite". MBZ-SAT was launched on Tuesday from the Space Launch Complex 4E at the Vandenberg Space Force Base in California, US, aboard SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket. The launch was witnessed by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum from the Mission Control Centre of the Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC).
