    Greater Noida: 11-year-old boy rescued within 10 hours of being kidnapped, cops rewarded for good work

    Acting swiftly, an 11-year-old boy was rescued by the Greater Noida Police on Monday (October 3) from four kidnappers who demanded a ransom of Rs 30 lakh from the family. The boy, Harsh was rescued within 10 hours of being kidnapped.

    Two of the kidnappers sustained gunshot injuries while the other two fled post a brief encounter with the police. A search operation is underway to nab the other two suspects. The complaint was registered on Sunday (October 2) after which the police swung into action.

    SC panel on freebies expected to fix band of 1% of state tax collections for expenditure on welfare schemes

    The Supreme Court panel on freebies should fix a band of one per cent GSDP or one per cent of state-owned tax collections or one per cent of state revenue expenditure for these welfare schemes of the states, according to a research report.

    With this, the desired welfare schemes can be implemented in a proper way, Soumya Kanti Ghosh, Group Chief Economic Adviser, State Bank of India, has said.

    Bomb threat on China-bound Iranian plane over Indian airspace, IAF fighter jets scrambled

    Indian Air Force jets were scrambled on Monday after reports came about a ‘bomb threat’ onboard China-bound Iranian passenger jet over Indian airspace, said sources. The plane is now moving towards China. Security agencies monitoring the plane, added sources.

    The report about the possibility of a bomb on board came from security agencies in Delhi which triggered an alert. Subsequently, the permission was not granted to the plane to land in Delhi.

    Update: Bhadohi Durga Puja fire incident: Death toll reaches 5; 64 injured

    The death toll in the Bhadohi Durga Puja pandal fire incident reached 5 on Monday. Three children, including a 12-year-old boy, a 10-year-old boy and two women died, said Bhadohi DM Gaurang Rathi.

    Over 60 people were injured after pooja pandal caught fire when the Aarti was being performed at around 9 PM on Sunday night.

    Gandhi look-alike as Asura in Kolkata puja pandal stokes controversy

    A Durga idol in Kolkata in which the ‘Mahisasura’ (Buffalo demon) was replaced by a crudely crafted Mahatma Gandhi-look alike has created controversy on Sunday, the birth anniversary of the father of the nation.

    Akhil Bharatiya Hindu Mahasabha, organisers of the puja near Ruby Crossing in southwest Kolkata, changed the appearance of the idol that looked like Gandhi following instructions from the police after a complaint was lodged. The organisers said the similarities were “just a coincidence”.

    RSS expresses concern over 'rising income inequality'; terms poverty as 'demon-like challenge'

    Brazil election authority: Bolsonaro, Lula headed to runoff

    Rio de Janeiro: Former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva of the leftist Workers' Party got the most votes in Brazil's presidential election Sunday, but not enough to avoid a runoff vote against his far-right rival, incumbent Jair Bolsonaro.

    With 97% of the votes tallied, da Silva had 47. 9% support and Bolsonaro 43. 6%. Since neither candidate received more than 50% of the valid votes, which exclude spoiled and blank ballots, a second round vote between them will be scheduled for October 30.

    Brazil's election authority announced late Sunday that a second round was a mathematical certainty.
