Kerala police on Friday said they have arrested two Congress workers for allegedly circulating a fake video targeting the Left candidate for the Thrikkakara byelection Dr. Jo Joseph. Congress Amayur Mandalam president T K Sukkur and a former office-bearer of the party Sivadasan were held for "sharing, liking and commenting" on a video that portrays Joseph in a poor light, the police said.

Veteran journalist Sat Soni passes away
Veteran journalist and author Sat Soni has died at a private hospital in Gurugram, his family said on Friday. He was 89. Born in Mandalay in Myanmar, he had moved to Punjab in 1944 in the wake of the Japanese invasion during the Second World War. He was educated in Jalandhar, where he learnt Urdu and Hindi for the first time, a family member said. "Sat Soni, one of the most senior Hindi journalists of the nation, breathed his last on Thursday at Medanta Hospital in Gurugram," the family said in a statement. He began his career in language journalism in 1951 by joining the Urdu daily, "Milap".

"Require adequate assurances” on Sri Lanka’s debt sustainability restoration: IMF
Since Sri Lanka’s public debt is assessed as "unsustainable," the IMF has said that it requires "sufficient assurance" from the country that it will restore debt sustainability during the debt restructuring process, a media report on Friday quoted the global crisis lender as saying. “The (IMF) team welcomes the appointment of financial and legal advisors to engage in a collaborative dialogue with their creditors. It is an important step towards restoring public debt sustainability,” the EconomyNext website cited the International Monetary Fund as saying after the end of technical level negotiations between the crisis-hit country's officials and the IMF team.'

Over 4 kg gold worth Rs 2 cr seized from two passengers at Chandigarh airport
The Customs department has recovered over four kg gold worth more than Rs 2 crore from two passenger who arrived from Dubai at the Chandigarh international airport here on May 25, an official said on Friday. Customs officials intercepted a passenger and found four gold bricks of one kg each from his hand bag, said the official. The gold bricks were concealed inside a towel, said the official.

COVID infection may induce severe bone loss, animal study suggests
Infection with the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which causes COVID-19, can lead to severe bone loss during the acute and post-recovery phases of the disease, according to a study conducted in hamsters. The findings, recently published in the peer-reviewed journal Nature Communications, provide insights into the possible long-term complications of COVID-19. In addition to lung infection, complications of different organ systems in the long-term SARS-CoV-2 infection, or "long COVID," have been increasingly recognised in patients with disease, the researchers said. However, the full spectrum of clinical manifestations, especially the influence of SARS-CoV-2 infection on bone metabolism, has yet to be fully understood, they said.

National Conference (NC) president and former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Farooq Abdullah has been summoned by the ED for questioning in a money laundering case in Delhi on May 31, official sources said on Friday. The questioning is reported to be in connection with a case of alleged financial irregularities in the Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association (JKCA) that is being probed by the federal agency. Another model found dead in Kolkata, second incident in three days
Another model was found hanging from the ceiling of her room in her family residence in Kolkata's Patuli area on Friday, the second such incident in three days, police said. Her mother claimed that the deceased, identified as Manjusha Niyogi, was suffering from acute depression after the death of her friend and colleague in the industry, Bidisha De Majumder, two days before. De Majumder, a popular face in bridal make-up photo-shoots, was also found hanging inside her rented apartment in Dumdum area on Wednesday evening. Niyogi's body was sent to a hospital for post-mortem examination to ascertain the cause of death, a police officer said.

Maharashtra: 15 injured as bus falls into gorge in Palghar
At least 15 persons were injured, five of them seriously, when the bus they were travelling in plunged into a 25-feet deep gorge at Wagobha Khind in Palghar district of Maharashtra on Mumbai-Ahmedabad highway early on Friday, police said. The incident occurred around 6 am when the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) bus was travelling from Bhusawal in north Maharashtra's Jalgaon district to Boisar in Palghar, a police official said.

Japan to resume tourism in June; only packaged tour for now
Japan will open its borders to foreign tourists in June for the first time since imposing tight pandemic travel restrictions about two years ago, but only for package tours for now, the prime minister said Thursday. Beginning June 10, Japan will allow the entry of people on tours with fixed schedules and guides, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said. Tourists from areas with low COVID-19 infection rates who have received three vaccine doses will be exempt from testing and quarantine after entry. Japan this week is hosting small experimental package tours from four countries, Australia, Singapore, Thailand and the United States. That experiment, which involves only 50 people who received special visas, not tourist visas, is to end May 31.

4 Lashkar-e-Toiba militants killed in two encounters in Kashmir
Four Lashkar-e-Toiba militants, including two who were involved in killing a female TV artist, were killed in two separate encounters in Pulwama and Srinagar districts of Jammu and Kashmir, police said on Friday. Odisha recorded 39-point decline in infant mortality rate, highest in India: CMO

Claiming the mausoleum of Sufi saint Moinuddin Chishti in Ajmer was once a temple, a Hindu outfit has demanded a survey of the premises by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). Rajvardhan Singh Parmar of Maharana Pratap Sena claimed Hindu symbols were present on the walls and windows of the dargah. However, the body of Khadims (servitors) has rejected the claim, saying there was no such symbol. “The dargah of Khwaja Gareeb Nawaz was an ancient Hindu temple earlier. The symbols of Swastika are there on the walls and windows. We demand that ASI conduct a survey of the dargah,” Parmar told reporters.

The Delhi Police has not yet taken any decision over opening of restrobars in the city till 3 am, and contemplating if licence conditions need to be changed, police officials said on Thursday. "The city police has not yet taken any decision about what needs to be done regarding opening of restrobars in the city till 3 am. Because the existing order is only till 1 pm and if it needs to be extended, then everyone's licensing conditions need to be amended," a senior police officer said. Restaurants' licence is approved by the licensing department of Delhi Police, officials said.
