    Char Dham Yatra | More than 8 lakh devotees have visited so far

    About eight lakh pilgrims from across the country and abroad have so far undertaken the Char Dham yatra, visiting the shrines of Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri and Yamunotri in Uttarakhand, while lakhs more have registered for the pilgrimage, officials said on Saturday. They said there are no slots for registration left for the month of May. People who intend to undertake the pilgrimage are required to register themselves prior to the yatra.

    Active case count hits zero, Manipur turns coronavirus-free

    Manipur became a coronavirus-free state with three active COVID-19 patients recovering from the disease, a health department official said. The active case count in the northeastern state hit zero for the first time in the last 26 months, Health Services Director Dr K Rajo Singh said. The caseload remained at 1,37,230, he said. Altogether, 1,35,110 people have so far recuperated from the disease and the recovery rate was 98.45 per cent.

    A fast-track court here has fixed July 20 as the next date of hearing in a suit related to the shifting of the Shahi Masjid Idgah from the land of the Katra Keshav Dev temple filed by petitioner Gopal Baba, a disciple of Naga Baba, last year, the petitioner's counsel said.     Man wanted for murder in Maha nabbed at wedding in UP

    A 24-year-old man, who had been on the run for four years in a murder case in Maharashtra, was apprehended at a wedding in Uttar Pradesh, police said on Saturday. Based on a tip-off, a team from the MBVV police's crime unit-I took part in the wedding, which the accused Sachin Sunil Upadyaya was to attend in Jounpur, and nabbed him on Friday, senior inspector Aviraj Kurhade said.

    Fire breaks out at factory in Delhi

    A fire broke out at a factory in north Delhi's Bawana area on Saturday morning, officials said. The information about the fire was received at 11.05 am. Seven to eight fire tenders are working at the spot to douse the blaze, the fire officials said. In another incident, a fire broke out at a shop in east Delhi's Pandav Nagar area. The fire department received information about it at 11.05 am, they said. Seven fire tenders have been pressed into service, the officials said. No casualty has been reported in either of the incidents so far. Further details are awaited.

    Meghalaya Chief Minister rules out possibility of repealing Gaming Act

    Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has ruled out the possibility of repealing the Meghalaya Regulation of Gaming Act, 2021 saying its repeal would cost the state about Rs 10 crore revenue loss. He said the Act is required to regulate existing gambling parlours which have been there for the past 25 years in the hill state. “If we repeal (the Act) then there will be nothing to regulate and we will only be losing close to Rs 8 crore to Rs 10 crore of revenue,” the Chief Minister told reporters on Friday night.

    NSE co-location scam: CBI launches search operation in multiple cities

    The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) launched a coordinated search operation at over 10 locations in multiple cities on Saturday in connection with the NSE co-location scam case, officials said. The search operation will cover brokers at more than 12 premises in Mumbai, Gandhinagar, Delhi, Noida, Gurugram and Kolkata, among other cities, they added. The central agency has filed a chargesheet against former National Stock Exchange (NSE) CEO and MD Chitra Ramkrishna and group operating officer Anand Subramanian in the case, the officials said.

    High Court tells Meghalaya govt to file affidavit on implementing prevention of cruelty to animals act

    The Meghalaya High Court has directed the state government to file a comprehensive affidavit to indicate the steps taken to implement the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960 and the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Regulation of Livestock Markets) Rules, 2017. Acting on a PIL filed by the Gau Gyan Foundation, the two-member bench of Chief Justice Sanjib Banerjee and Justice W Diengdoh in its order on Friday said: "A secretary to the state government should file an affidavit to indicate the steps taken in terms of the said Rules of 2017, the measures taken in consonance with the Act of 1960 and a clear timeline within which the said rules may be implemented and the other concerns indicated herein addressed."

    Rajasthan ACB arrests government hospital official, 2 others for taking bribes

    The financial advisor of a government hospital here and two others were arrested for allegedly taking bribes of Rs 15.6 lakh, Rajasthan Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) officials said. The accused were arrested under the Prevention of Corruption Act on Thursday night, they said. The accused had demanded a bribe of Rs 5 crore to clear a bill for the installation of a radiotherapy machine in Sawai Man Singh Hospital from the complainant, who runs a private hospital, ACB Director General B L Soni said on Friday. After verification of the complaint, a trap was laid and SMS Hospital's financial advisor Brijbhushan Sharma was arrested while accepting a bribe of Rs 7.80 lakh, he said.

    In biggest victory yet, Russia claims to capture Mariupol

    In what would be its biggest victory yet in the war with Ukraine, Russia claimed to have captured Mariupol after a nearly three-month siege that reduced much of the strategic port city to a smoking ruin, with over 20,000 civilians feared dead. Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu reported to President Vladimir Putin the “complete liberation” of the Azovstal steel plant in Mariupol — the last stronghold of Ukrainian resistance — and the city as a whole, spokesman Igor Konashenkov said Friday. There was no immediate confirmation from Ukraine. Russia's state news agency RIA Novosti quoted the ministry as saying a total of 2,439 Ukrainian fighters who had been holed up at the steelworks had surrendered since Monday, including over 500 on Friday.

    Israeli troops shot and killed a Palestinian teenage boy as clashes erupted when they entered a volatile town in the occupied West Bank early Saturday, the Palestinian Health Ministry and local media said.     Six members of a marriage party were killed and three others injured in a head-on collision between an SUV and a tractor-trolley on the Tulsipur-Barhni National Highway here, police said on Saturday.     BJP govt unable to control crime in UP: Akhilesh

    Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav on Friday accused the ruling BJP of failing to control crime in Uttar Pradesh. Yadav claimed that crimes against children have attained new records under the BJP rule. In a statement issued from the SP headquarters, Yadav claimed that from January 1 to April 30, 82 children, including 35 boys and 47 girls, have gone missing from four districts of the state.     A tornado tore through a small northern Michigan community on Friday, killing at least one person and injuring at least 23 others as it flipped vehicles, tore the roofs off of buildings, and downed trees and power lines. The twister hit Gaylord, a city of about 4,200 people roughly 370 kilometers northwest of Detroit, at around 3.45 pm (local time).     Telangana logs 45 new COVID-19 cases

    Telangana on Friday recorded 45 new COVID-19 cases, taking the total tally in the state to 7,92,802, a health department bulletin said. The death toll continued to be 4,111, it said. Hyderabad recorded the highest number of 33 cases. A total of 28 people recovered from the infection taking the cumulative number of recoveries till date to 7,88,278. The active cases in the state stood at 413, the bulletin said.

    Delhi government raises minimum monthly wages of unskilled, skilled labourers

    The Delhi government has hiked minimum monthly wages of unskilled and skilled labourers by Rs 450-Rs 550 in view of high rate of inflation, according to an official statement on Friday. The increased minimum wages for labourers will be applicable from April 1, it said. "The hike in minimum wages will give respite to the labour class facing back-breaking inflation. The Delhi government is paying the highest rates of minimum wages in the entire country," Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said.

    Chhattisgarh: 6 held for impersonation in CISF constabulary exam in Durg

    Six persons, five of them belonging to Uttar Pradesh, were arrested in Chhattisgarh's Durg district for allegedly appearing in place of actual candidates in the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) constable recruitment exam, a senior official said on Friday. The accused were caught on Wednesday when they arrived at CISF's Recruitment and Training Centre (RTC) in Bhilai town here to appear for the physical test as part of the exam conducted by the Staff Selection Commission (SSC), Durg Superintendent of Police Abhishek Pallava said.

    Chhattisgarh: Woman jumps into Chitrakote waterfall, video goes viral

    An unidentified woman on Friday jumped into the Chitrakote waterfall on the Indravati river in Chhattisgarh's Bastar district, police said. The incident took place around 2 pm and search has been launched in the river for the woman, said an official. In a video which went viral, onlookers can be heard yelling in the background, trying to stop the woman poised to jump from the top of the 96-feet high waterfall. According to eyewitnesses, the woman stood on the edge of the waterfall for some time before jumping off.
