Around 700 employees will become 'surplus' after unification of Delhi's civic bodies, say officials
As the term of the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) ended on Wednesday, civic authorities said after the unification of the three civic bodies, nearly 700 employees will become "surplus" and it will be a challenge for the new system to accommodate them. They said by May 22, all the three civic bodies will be dissolved, paving the way for a unified Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). The North Delhi Municipal Corporation's (NDMC) term will end on May 19, while the EDMC will complete its term on May 22.

IB official dies after accidental fall during security check in Hyderabad
An assistant director of the Intelligence Bureau (IB), based out of Hyderabad, died on Wednesday after an accidental fall from the dais of an auditorium here while reviewing security arrangements, police said. The accident happened when a team of the IB, ISW (intelligence security wing) of the Telangana police and other police officers were reviewing the security at the venue where a function to be attended by Vice-President M Venkaiah Naidu is to be held on May 20, they said.

Police on Wednesday arrested a Nagpur man for allegedly posting a derogatory remark on Facebook about Lord Shiva in the backdrop of the ongoing Gyanvapi mosque row in Uttar Pradesh, an official said. The accused, Charudatta Jichkar, a resident of the Ganesh Peth area, runs an audio recording shop and was called for questioning by the police after a complaint was received against him over the remark made in the context of claims that a 'Shivling' has been discovered inside Varanasi's Gyanvapi mosque complex during a court-mandated videography survey of the premises, he said.

COVID-19: Chhattisgarh sees 14 new cases, zero death; active tally at 28
Chhattisgarh on Wednesday recorded 14 new coronavirus positive cases, taking the overall tally to 11,52,355, while the death toll remained unchanged at 14,034 as nobody succumbed to the infection during the day, an official said. Seven out of the 14 cases were reported in Raipur, followed by one each in Raigarh, Janjgir-Champa and five other districts.

Russia: Nearly 1,000 Ukrainian fighters left Mariupol plant
The Russian Defence Ministry says that nearly 1,000 Ukrainian troops holed up in their last stronghold in Mariupol have handed themselves over. Russian Defence Ministry spokesman Maj. Gen. Igor Konashenkov said Wednesday that 694 Ukrainian soldiers at the Azovstal steel plant have surrendered over the past 24 hours. That brings the total of Ukrainian troops who have left the plant this week to 959.

At least 12 labourers were killed when a wall collapsed at a salt packaging factory in Gujarat's Morbi district on Wednesday, officials said. The tragic incident took place at Sagar Salt factory situated inside the Halvad industrial area, said state Labour and Employment Minister and local MLA Brijesh Merja. "At least 12 factory workers have died. Efforts to rescue others who might have been trapped under the debris is still on," he said.

Inflation, unemployment making new records under 'failed' governance of Centre: Sachin Pilot
Congress leader Sachin Pilot on Wednesday targeted the BJP-led government at the Centre over the issue of inflation, saying it is "looting" people's income. The wholesale price-based inflation soared to a record high of 15.08 per cent in April mainly on account of spiralling prices of food, fuel and other commodities. Goa government planning to offer incentives for glass bottle waste collection from beaches
Goa Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte on Wednesday said they are planning to bring a scheme offering incentives to those who collect glass bottle waste from beaches in the coastal state. There is already a ban on carrying glass bottles on beaches which needs to be implemented more strictly, he told reporters. But, some tourists leave broken glass bottles on the beaches. Several visitors and locals have complained of injuries because of it on the beaches, Khaunte noted. The state government, with the help of businessmen and tourism department, will introduce a scheme offering monetary incentives to those who collect such bottles from the beaches and hand them over to vendors. “We will also take beer manufacturers into confidence while drafting this scheme,” he said.

The Supreme Court on Wednesday ordered release of A G Perarivalan, who has served over 30 years of life term in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case. A bench headed by Justice L Nageswara Rao invoked its extraordinary power under Article 142 to grant relief to Perarivalan. "State cabinet had taken its decision based on relevant considerations. In exercise of Article 142, it is appropriate to release the convict," the bench said. Article 142 deals with enforcement of decrees and orders of the Supreme Court and orders as to discovery, etc.

Nine new Delhi High Court judges on Wednesday took oath of office, taking the total strength of the court to 44. Acting Chief Justice Vipin Sanghi administered the oath of office to Justices Tara Vitasta Ganju, Mini Pushkarna, Vikas Mahajan, Tushar Rao Gedela, Manmeet Pritam Singh Arora, Sachin Datta, Amit Mahajan, Gaurang Kanth and Saurabh Banerjee. Delhi: Light rain forecast in city
Partly cloudy sky and light rain are forecast for the national capital on Wednesday and the maximum temperature is likely to settle around 42 degrees Celsius. The maximum temperature is predicted to rise and hit the 45-degree mark over the next few days, weather forecasters said. Uttar Pradesh: Road accident in Bhadohi leaves 3 dead
An SUV collided with a truck here in the early hours of Wednesday, leaving three members of a marriage party dead and 15 others injured, police said. The SUV was carrying a marriage party from Pakri village to Amvakhurd village when the accident took place, a police official said. Locals rushed the injured to the Maharaja Balwant Singh Government Hospital in the district from where seven have been referred to a trauma centre in Varanasi. The condition of some of those referred to Varanasi is critical, the official said.

The capture of Mariupol would make it the biggest city to be taken by Moscow's forces and would give the Kremlin a badly needed victory, though the landscape has largely been reduced to rubble. Haryana: 2 men wanted for murder arrested 9 months after crime
Two men wanted in a murder case were nabbed nine months after they went into hiding, police said on Tuesday. Accused Amit Singh and Deep Chand alias Tinku, residents of Ujina village in Nuh district, had allegedly killed a youth on August 26 last year after which they were staying low-profile in Haryana's Bilaspur. The Farrukhnagar crime unit arrested them from Bilaspur Chowk on Monday evening. The police took them in remand after producing them before the court on Tuesday, an official said.

A group of students pursuing postgraduate courses in Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) on Tuesday staged a protest against offline exams. India intends to operate S-400 missile system to defend against threats from Pakistan, China: Pentagon
By June 2022, India intends to deploy the S-400 missile defence system that it has received from Russia to defend itself against threat from Pakistan and China, a Pentagon spy master has told US lawmakers. India started receiving the delivery of S-400 missile defence system from Russia in December last year, Lt Gen Scott Berrier, Director, Defense Intelligence Agency told members of the Senate Armed Services Committee during a recent Congressional hearing. As of October 2021, India’s military was seeking to procure advanced surveillance systems to strengthen its land and sea borders and boost its offensive and defensive cyber capabilities.

Mamata Banerjee asks police to check arms smuggling into Kharagpur
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday asked police to beef up security in the industrial town of Kharagpur and other places in Paschim Medinipur district to safeguard the border region from “armed miscreants” from across the inter-state border. Banerjee pointed to reports of arms were being smuggled into the district from neighbouring states like Bihar and Jharkhand via trains, and expressed doubts over the effectiveness of Government Railway Police (GRP) in checking the new trend.
