    Temperature to be higher than normal in northwest India, adjoining central India in April: IMD DG

    Northwest India and adjoining parts of central India are predicted to see “more intense and frequent heatwave” conditions in April, India Meteorological Department Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said on Wednesday. “We are expecting that the temperature will be higher than normal in the entire northwest India and the adjoining central India, starting with Gujarat, Rajasthan and up to east Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh,” he said at a virtual event on “Building Climate Resilience for the Most Heat Vulnerable”. The IMD had earlier predicted that April will be “more severe” than March and the temperatures will be higher than normal, Mohapatra said. “The frequency of intense heatwave conditions will be higher in April as compared to March. And, we expect the heatwave conditions to continue till April 15 in some parts,” he added.

    Armed men loot sugar sacks from train in MP, open fire on police

    A gang of armed robbers looted sacks of sugar from a goods train and opened fire at police in the wee hours on Wednesday in Madhya Pradesh's Morena district, an official said. One of the members of the gang was injured in retaliatory firing by police and undergoing treatment, said Sub-Divisional Officer of Police (SDOP) AK Singh. "The incident occurred when a goods train carrying sacks of sugar was headed towards Delhi. As the train halted briefly awaiting the green signal at the Sikroda station, a gang of robbers started offloading 43 sacks of sugar," he said.

    UP: 7 of family ill after consuming adulterated food

    As many as seven members of a family were taken ill after allegedly consuming adulterated food following their Navratri fast in the district, officials said on Wednesday. They said the family in Bhenswal village under Gharipukhta police station limits fell ill after consuming adulterated buckwheat (Kuttu) flour Tuesday night. They were rushed to a government hospital where their condition is said to be stable, the officials said. According to the police, the family members had consumed food made of the adulterated flour after fasting for the day. They complained of stomach ache and started vomiting shortly after consuming the food, the officials said, adding the police have started a probe.

    Andhra Pradesh ministers to resign ahead of Cabinet reorganisation on April 11

    All 24 members of the Andhra Pradesh Council of Ministers will tender their resignation en masse when they formally meet here for the last time on April 7, to let Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy reconstitute his Cabinet. The new Council of Ministers will be inducted on April 11. While the reconstituted Cabinet will have new faces, at least four from the incumbent team may be re-inducted, government sources said. The fresh inductions and retentions are solely based on caste criteria, with no other factor in play, the sources noted. When he took over as Chief Minister on May 30, 2019, Jagan had announced that he would undertake a complete overhaul of his Cabinet after two and a half years and take-in a new team.

    Karnataka CM meets FM Sitharaman, discusses GST and pending state projects

    Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai Wednesday called on Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman here and discussed key state issues including the pending GST share and irrigation projects. Bommai, who is on a two-day visit to the national capital, met the FM in the Parliament complex. He is also likely to meet the top BJP brass to discuss the impending changes in the state cabinet even as several aspirants are in the national capital to lobby for a berth for themselves.     Woman, toddler son crushed to death by bus in UP's Etawah

    A one-and-half-year-old boy and his mother were crushed to death under a bus after they fell from a motorbike on the Etawah-Bareilly highway here, police said on Wednesday. Rushi Shakya (26) and her son were returning home on the bike of her brother on Tuesday evening when the two-wheeler skidded and threw the mother-son duo off the seat, Assistant Superintendent of Police (rural) Satyapal Singh said. Shakya and her son were crushed by the bus, he said, adding the woman's brother sustained minor injuries. The road was blocked for a while by irate villagers. They were pacified by officials and the blockade was lifted, the police officer said.

    Delhi: 8 rescued from house on fire in Badli Extension

    Eight people were rescued from a fire that broke out at a house in Badli Extension of Outer Delhi area on Wednesday, officials in the fire service said. On receiving information about the blaze around 5.50 am, three fire tenders were rushed to the spot, Delhi Fire Service Director Atul Garg said. Eight people were rescued. The fire has been doused and the cooling operation was underway, he said, adding the cause of the blaze was being ascertained.

    Thane district logs 6 COVID cases

    Thane district in Maharashtra has reported six fresh coronavirus positive cases, taking the tally to 7,08,810, an official said on Wednesday. These cases were reported on Tuesday, he said. The COVID-19 death toll in the district remains unchanged at 11,883 for the past several days as no new fatalities due to the viral infection were reported. The mortality rate is 1.67 per cent, the official added.

    Myanmar orders foreign money held by banks changed to kyats

    An order by Myanmar's central bank that all foreign currency in bank accounts must be converted into the local currency has many in the military-ruled country worried over potential losses. Businesses and individuals were told in a notice issued Sunday that as of Monday they must convert dollars and other foreign currency into kyats within one day or face legal consequences. Foreign currency can only be sent overseas with government approval, it said. It said further details of the rules would follow. Myanmar's military leaders are facing a raft of sanctions after they seized power on Feb 1, 2021, ousting the country's elected government.

    Uttar Pradesh girl with Aadhaar name glitch gets admission in school

    After the intervention of the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister's Office, the five-year-old girl, who was named as 'Baby five of Madhu' in her Aadhaar card and thereafter denied admission to school, was finally given admission. The state Education Department officials and the school principal said the girl whose name is Aarti had been given admission. Seema Rani, the principal of the school, added, "The woman had come on April 2 for the admission of her daughter. We had asked to get the Aadhaar card corrected. She has been admitted to the school." In the Aadhaar card, instead of the name of the child, 'Madhu's fifth child' was found written, which left the school and the Badaun District Magistrate shocked.

    Haryana govt encouraging participation of Divyangjan in sports: Governor

    Haryana Governor Bandaru Dattatreya on Tuesday said the state government is encouraging the participation of people with disabilities in sports and has increased the cash reward to those winning medals at Special Olympics. The governor was speaking at the inauguration of a National Health Festival organised for Divyangjan, or people with disabilities, as part of the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav celebrations. The festival was organised by the Special Olympics Bharat at the SGT University. The Special Olympics Bharat is organising similar events across the country wherein 75,000 people with disabilities will be medically examined on April 5 and 7.

    Haryana CM ML Khattar withdraws 'VIP' registration numbers of 4 vehicles of his convoy

    Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar on Tuesday announced withdrawing "VIP" registration numbers of four vehicles of his convoy to make them available to the common public. The chief minister made the announcement during a discussion on the amendment in the Haryana Motor Vehicles Rules-1993 in a Cabinet meeting held here Tuesday evening, according to an official statement. He said that from today all "VIP" registration numbers of vehicles will be available for the general public. Such numbers will be allotted through e-auction. "After this announcement, many among the general public who are fond of buying fancy numbers for their vehicles will be able to purchase these VIP numbers currently allotted to 179 state government vehicles," said the statement. According to the statement, it is estimated that a revenue to the tune of Rs 18 crore will be earned through e-auctioning these 179 "VIP numbers".

    Uttar Pradesh government unveils its 100-day action plan

    Asserting that Uttar Pradesh has huge potential for development, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Tuesday said his government's aim is to make it the number one state in the country. At the presentation of a 100-day action plan of the government, the chief minister said that a comprehensive framework should be made for achieving this target, according to an official release issued. He asked all departments to prepare a detailed and practical action plan by setting the targets for 100 days, six months and a year. He stressed on implementing the promises made by the BJP in the run-up to the assembly elections. Chief Secretary Durga Shankar Mishra presented the 100-day action plan of the government before the cabinet. The chief minister said that to give concrete shape to the action plan, "we all have to work as 'Team UP'.

    Congress holds meeting amid speculations of rift in JMM-led coalition

    Jharkhand Pradesh Congress Committee president Rajesh Thakur Tuesday said that top leaders of the party's state unit participated in a meeting convened at its headquarters in Delhi and discussed the common minimum programme (CMP) among other issues. The meeting by Congress was held during the day in the midst of speculations of a rift between the ruling alliance partners - JMM and the Congress in the tribal state.     Mumbai: All beneficiaries above 18 fully vaccinated against COVID

    All eligible beneficiaries above the age of 18 years in Mumbai have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19, the city civic body announced on Tuesday. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said it has administered 92,42,888 second doses as on Tuesday against the original target of 92,36,500. BMC executive health officer Mangala Gomare confirmed that Mumbai has achieved the full vaccination milestone, more than 14 months after the nationwide roll-out of the coronavirus inoculation drive.
