    (PTI) Five people were injured after the roof of a building collapsed here on Sunday evening, a Delhi Fire Service official said. Three to four more people are believed to be trapped under the debris, they said.

    Gurugram: Six children drown in pond

    Six children drowned while taking a bath in a rainwater-filled pond in Haryana's Gurugram on Sunday, police said. The bodies of the children, all boys aged between 8 and 13, have been recovered, they said. Durgesh, Ajit, Rahul, Piyush, Deva and Varun, all residents of Shankar Vihar Colony, had gone to take a bath in the pond this afternoon and drowned, the police said.

    Ukraine: Russian strikes kill at least 12 after bridge blast

    A Russian missile barrage that crumbled apartment buildings and houses in Ukraine's city of Zaporizhzhia killed at least dozen people, Ukrainian officials said on Sunday as Moscow strained to enforce its takeover of illegally annexed territory. The blasts that collapsed at least one high-rise residential building and blew out the windows of others came from six missiles launched in Russian-occupied areas of the Zaporizhzhia region, the Ukrainian air force said.

    Half-burnt body of minor girl found in Haryana's Kaithal

    The half-burnt body of a seven-year-old girl, who went missing on Saturday, was found in a nearby forest area here on Sunday, police said. The girl, daughter of a labourer, had gone missing after she went to answer nature's call on Saturday. Family members and villagers searched the girl in the entire Kurad village on Saturday evening but could not find her. Later, they informed the police.

    Rahul’s yatra has no value, says Yediyurappa

    Former Chief Minister and BJP stalwart B S Yediyurappa on Sunday said Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ has no value as his party would never come to power in poll-bound Karnataka. “Your (Rahul Gandhi) party’s presence is dwindling across India barring one or two places. In Karnataka, it is somehow breathing. So, he (Rahul Gandhi) is talking whatever comes to his mind, but that is of no use,” Yediyurappa told reporters in Harisandra village in the district.

    Odisha: Two killed, 21 injured in lightning strike

    At least two persons were killed and 21 others sustained burn injuries when lightning struck them during a football match in Odisha's Sundergarh district on Sunday, police said.     Delhi to get mobile fire tenders at 50 sites, more fire stations

    The Delhi Fire Service has formed an internal committee headed by the Chief Fire Officer to identify 50 mishap-prone spots in the national capital where mobile fire tenders can be deployed. It will also come up with locations where new fire stations could be set up, an official said on Sunday. The development comes days after Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena suggested a slew of measures to improve the national capital's fire-fighting capability during a meeting with the Delhi Fire Service to review preparedness ahead of Diwali.

    Ukraine: Russian strikes kill 17 following bridge attack

    A Russian barrage pounded apartment buildings and other targets in the Ukrainian city of Zaporizhzhia, killing at least 17 people and wounding dozens, officials said on Sunday. The blasts in the city, which sits in a region Moscow has claimed as its own, blew out windows in adjacent buildings and left at least one high-rise apartment building partially collapsed. The multiple strikes came after an explosion Saturday caused the partial collapse of a bridge linking the Crimean Peninsula with Russia, damaging an important supply artery for the Kremlin's faltering war effort in southern Ukraine and hitting a towering symbol of Russian power in the region.

    Rajasthan: Dalit woman gangraped in Ajmer; was held captive for days

    A 25-year-old Dalit woman was allegedly raped by a group of men, including a priest, in Ajmer district, police said on Sunday. According to police, the accused, Sanjay Sharma, was a family priest of the victim and used to perform prayers for her family. As per the complaint, the accused first raped the woman finding her alone at home and recorded a video of her. Later, he extorted money from her and raped her again with others, Ajmer North DSP Chhavi Sharma said.

    Amit Shah prays at Kamakhya Temple in Guwahati

    Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday offered prayers at the famous Kamakhya Temple, one of 51 Shakti Peethas, atop the Nilachal Hills here on the last day of his three-day visit to Assam. Accompanied by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Water Resources Minister Pijush Hazarika, Shah came to the temple from the State Guest House where he spent the last two nights. The Union minister and Sarma reached the sanctum sanctorum of the temple where they offered prayers to the deity with the help of three priests. Shah was inside for over 10 minutes and, after coming out, made a 'parikrama' (circumambulation) of the temple which is the centrepiece of the Tantrik Shaktism cult in India.

    Second highest rainfall since 2007 in Delhi brings day-night temperature margin to record low: IMD

    The national capital received the second highest rainfall since 2007 in the last 24 hours till 8.30 am, according to the India Meteorological data on Sunday. The city weathered near ceaseless rains – measuring 74mm till 8.30 am Sunday – that brought the maximum temperature on Saturday down by 10 notches, closing in the day-night temperature gap to a record low. Incessant rains for the second consecutive day in the national capital improved the air quality on Sunday to "satisfactory" level.

    PM Modi on 3-day visit to poll-bound Gujarat from today | DETAILS

    Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be on a three-day visit to Gujarat from Sunday where he will launch various projects worth more than Rs 14,600 crore and address gatherings ahead of the state Assembly polls due later this year. Modi will arrive in the evening and will inaugurate and lay the foundation stone of multiple projects worth about Rs 3,900 crore at Modhera village in Mehsana district. He will also declare Modhera as India's first 24x7 solar-powered village. The PM will also offer prayers at the Modheshwari Mata Temple and visit the Surya Mandir in Modhera. Making Modhera as the country's first round-the-clock solar powered village involved developing a ground mounted solar power plant and more than 1,300 rooftop solar systems on residential and government buildings, a government release said. On Monday, the prime minister will be at Amod in Bharuch district where he will dedicate to the nation various projects worth more than Rs 8,000 crore. He will inaugurate the Modi Shaikshanik Sankul -- an educational complex for the needy students -- in Ahmedabad on Monday.

    Uddhav Thackeray faction calls EC order on Shiv Sena symbol and name 'injustice'

    The Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena on Saturday termed the Election Commission's order barring both the Thackeray and Eknath Shinde factions from using the party name and election symbol in the coming Andheri East Assembly bypoll as "injustice". The group led by Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, on the other hand, termed the EC order appropriate. The poll body should have holistically taken a decision rather than passing an interim decision for the bypoll, said Ambadas Danve, Leader of the Opposition in Maharashtra Legislative Council, a Thackeray loyalist. "This is injustice," he told PTI.

    UP: Bodies of 3 women found floating in dam in Jhansi

    Bodies of three women were fished out of a dam located in the Mauranipur area here late Saturday evening, police said. A senior police official said the bodies may have come from the bordering Tikamgarh district of Madhya Pradesh. Efforts are on to identify the victims, he said. Information about a body floating in the Saprar dam was received from an irrigation department employee of Mauranipur, Senior Superintendent of Police Rajesh S said.

    Palestinian gunman kills woman Israeli soldier in Jerusalem

    A Palestinian opened fire on an Israeli military checkpoint in east Jerusalem on Saturday night, killing a female Israeli soldier and wounding three other people, Israeli authorities said. The attack came hours after a pair of Palestinian teenagers were killed during an Israeli military raid in the occupied West Bank. It was the latest bloodshed in the deadliest round of fighting in the area in seven years. It also came less than 24 hours before Israel was to begin celebrating the weeklong Sukkot holiday, a time when tens of thousands of Jews visit the holy city. Saturday night's shooting occurred at a checkpoint near the Shuafat refugee camp in east Jerusalem. Police said the assailant got out of a car and opened fire, seriously wounding the female soldier and a security guard before running into the camp. The army announced early Sunday that the woman, who was 19, had died.

    IMD gives yellow alert for parts of Maharashtra for next 3 to 4 days

    India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Saturday (October 8) gave a yellow alert for parts of central Maharashtra, Marathwada and over Konkan, for the next three to four days. "Mostly for the entire of Maharashtra, there are expectations of thundershowers, associated with isolated heavy rainfall. Thunderstorm warning- yellow warning- given for parts of central Maharashtra, Marathwada and over Konkan, for the next 3-4 days," IMD Mumbai Nitha TS, Scientist-C had told media. Several parts of Mumbai faced waterlogging due to incessant heavy rainfall on Saturday morning. "Generally cloudy sky with moderate to heavy rain/thundershower in the city and suburbs in the next 24 hours," India Meteorological Department had said on Saturday morning.

    North Korea launches 2 missiles toward sea after US-South Korea drills

    North Korea fired two short-range ballistic missiles toward its eastern waters on Sunday, the latest in its barrage of weapons tests in recent days, after the North warned against the US redeployment of an aircraft carrier for a new round of drills with South Korean warships.
    South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a statement it detected the two missiles launched between 1:48 am and 1:58 am on Sunday from the North's eastern coastal city of Munchon.

    Telangana: Battle lines drawn for Munugode bypoll

    The battle lines for the crucial November 3 bypoll to the Munugode assembly constituency in Telangana have been drawn with the ruling TRS and the opposition Congress and BJP announcing their candidates. The BJP on Saturday fielded Komatireddy Raj Gopal Reddy for the seat. Reddy quit the Congress in August and joined the BJP. He was the sitting MLA from the constituency and his resignation necessitated the bypoll.

    Magnitude 5.0 tremor strikes Greece; no damage reported

    A magnitude 5.0 earthquake hit central Greece early Sunday, but there were no early reports of damage or casualties. The tremor struck at 1:02 am and had an epicenter 12.7 kilometers below sea level in the Gulf of Corinth, about 100 kilometers west-northwest of the capital, the Athens Institute of Geodynamics reported. The tremor lasted at least 15 seconds and was felt over a large area. Near the sparsely populated epicenter, residents reported hearing a buzzing sound, according to local media. Tremors of this magnitude are common in Greece, which lies in a highly earthquake-prone area, north of where the African plate is pushing underneath the Eurasian plate.
