Union Minister for Road, Transport and National Highways, Nitin Gadkari met former Sadr-i-Riyasat of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir Karan Singh on Saturday and discussed upcoming projects in the Union Territory. Gadkari called on Singh at his residence, a statement from J-K Dharmarth Trust, headed by the latter said. The statement said Gadkari discussed the development of upcoming road and national highway projects in the Union Territory of J-K.

UP: Woman found dead with throat slit, parents arrested
A woman was found dead with her throat slit at her home in Shahjahanpur, police said on Saturday. "Body of Purti Gupta (24) was recovered from her home with her throat slit late Thursday night in Kotwali police station area," Superintendent of Police (SP) Ashok Kumar Meena said.

PM Modi to inaugurate Nalanda University campus in Bihar
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be in Bihar next week to inaugurate the campus of Nalanda University, named after the world-famous ancient seat of learning. Officials of the state government and the central university held a meeting here on Saturday to oversee the preparations for the PM's visit, on June 19. Dignitaries like Governor Rajendra Arlekar and Chief Minister Nitish Kumar are likely to attend the function where the Prime Minister is expected to spend an hour and a half. The PM is likely to reach the venue by helicopter from the nearest airport at Gaya.

Bengal BJP Core committee discusses party's performance in LS polls
A core committee meeting of the West Bengal BJP unit was held on Saturday where the performance of the party in the recent Lok Sabha elections and post-poll "attack" on party workers were discussed, a party leader said. BJP state president and Union minister Sukanta Majumdar, Union minister Shantanu Thakur, party state general secretary Agnimitra Paul and former MP Locket Chatterjee attended the closed door meeting in the presence of two central observers. The BJP won 12 Lok Sabha seats in West Bengal while the Trinamool Congress got 29 and the Congress 1.

Kuwait fire: 16 Keralites laid to rest so far
The last rites of four Keralites, who lost their lives in the tragic fire incident in Kuwait on June 12, were held at their respective hometowns in Kerala on Saturday where hundreds came to bid adieu. The bodies of 23 Keralites who lost their lives in the fire that happened in one of the residential accommodations of a company at Mangaf in Kuwait, were brought to the state on Friday in a special flight from the Gulf nation.

8 Naxalites, one STF jawan killed in encounter in Chhattisgarh
Eight Naxalites and a jawan of the Special Task Force (STF) were killed in an encounter in Chhattisgarh's Narayanpur district on Saturday, police said. Two other STF personnel sustained injuries in the incident, they said. A huge cache of weapons and other materials belonging to Naxalites were recovered from the encounter site, they said.

Three drug smugglers arrested in Rajasthan's Hanumangarh, heroin worth Rs 2 crore recovered
Police arrested three men on Saturday from in Rajasthan's Hanumangarh for smuggling drugs and seized 400 grams of heroin, officials said. According to police, the market value of the recovered heroin in the international market is around Rs 2 crore.

UP: Driver killed, helper injured in truck collision on highway
A truck driver was killed and his helper seriously injured in a truck collision on the Puranpur-Assam Highway here, police said on Saturday. The accident took place late on Friday night near Sakaria village on the highway, Station House Officer (SHO) Puranpur police station Sanjeev Kumar Shukla said. Gursevak (48), a resident of Punjab, was killed in the incident, while his helper, Jagdish Singh, sustained serious injures, the police said.

Two held with sharp edged weapons in J-K’s Samba
Two alleged miscreants were arrested along with two sharp edged weapons in Jammu and Kashmir's Samba district, police said on Saturday. They were travelling on a motorcycle when they were intercepted by the police at Kala Gate Bari Brahmana checkpoint, leading to the recovery of two ‘Tokas’ from their possession, said a police spokesman. The miscreants identified as Happy Chib and Arun Singh, both residents of Samilpur, were arrested and booked under relevant sections of the Arms Act, the spokesman said.
