Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Saturday extended commiserations to the UK's Conservative Party leader Rishi Sunak on the party's recent electoral defeat, saying victories and setbacks are inevitable part of democracy and "we must take both in our stride".

In his letter to Sunak, Gandhi hailed the former British prime minister's dedication to public service and commitment to the British people. "I would like to extend my commiserations on the recent electoral outcome. Victories and setbacks are both an inevitable part of the journey in a democracy and we must take both in our stride," the Congress leader said.

A class 11 student stabbed a teacher at a coaching institute (in Sivasagar) today. The incident took place around 3.15 pm. The teacher was taken to the hospital where he was declared brought dead. We have apprehended the student and he is in our custody. We have visited the crime scene and collected the evidence," says Moidul Islam, Additional SP of Sivasagar district. 

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested seven accused including five Public Servants namely the Divisional Railway Manager(DRM), Sr. Divisional Finance Manager (Sr. DFM), then Sr. Divisional Engineer (Sr. DEN) Coordination, Office Superintendent, Account Assistant of South Central Railways, Guntakal  Division (Andhra Pradesh) and two private persons namely Director of a  Bangalore based firm (Private Person) &  another private person in a case of bribery of Rs11 lakh & jewellery taken/ given for showing favours in railway tenders etc.

Lok Sabha Speaker and BJP MP from Kota, Om Birla, said on Saturday that the Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the Lok Sabha is a constitutional post and said he expected all to follow parliamentary dignity.

He was referring to Rahul Gandhi, who came under fire from the leaders of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party for his alleged anti-Hindu remarks made in the Lok Sabha.

Pakistan’s former prime minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi on Saturday formally launched a new political party with the mission to change the system and restore respect for the Constitution of the country.
The main slogan of the Awaam Pakistan Party is: ‘Badlien gaen nizam’ (we will change the system) and its membership is open to anyone and everyone who can contribute to the development of the country.
Abbasi, 65, served as a prime minister from August 2017 to May 2018 when the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) chief Nawaz Sharif was disqualified by the Supreme Court.

Devprakash Madhukar, the main accused in the July 2 Hathras satsang stampede has been sent to 14-day judicial custody. He was arrested from Delhi by Uttar Pradesh Police which claimed he was recently contacted by some political parties and suspected that self-styled godman Bhole Baba's events were "funded" by a political party. Two more suspects -- Ramprakash Shakya, 61, and Sanju Yadav, 33, were held in Hathras in connection with the stampede that left 121 people dead, according to the police.

Delhi's Tis Hazari court on Saturday extended the judicial custody of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's former aide Bibhav Kumar for the next 10 days in the alleged assault case of Rajya Sabha MP Swati Maliwal. He was produced through video conferencing (vc) after the expiry of judicial custody. He was remanded to judicial custody on May 31 after his interrogation in the case.

Five Naxalites surrendered before the security forces in Chhattisgarh's Sukma district on Saturday, police said. Two of them together carried a reward of Rs 3 lakh on their heads.

The Naxalites turned themselves in before senior officials of the police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) citing disappointment with atrocities committed by the Maoists on tribals and the "inhuman and hollow" Maoist ideology, an official said.

The three-member judicial commission, formed by the state government under Justice Brijesh Kumar Srivastava (Retd), visited the spot of the stampede that happened on July 2 leading to the death of 121 people.

Two Border Security Force (BSF) personnel, including an assistant sub-inspector, were killed in separate road accidents in Kathua and Udhampur districts of Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday, officials said. ASI Parshotam Singh (58), a resident of Himachal Pradesh, lost his life, while two of his colleagues were rescued when their vehicle skidded off the road and fell into Ujh canal near Rajbagh in Kathua district, they said.

A man in his late 20s was attacked with iron rods by a group of men in West Delhi's Rajouri garden area, police said on Saturday. They said the incident took place in Subhash Nagar on Friday night when Niraj Sabharwal, a local, had gone to meet someone.

The body of a man, aged around 35, was found in a drain in North-East Delhi's Gokalpuri area on Saturday, police said. They said there was no external injury mark on the body.

A man in an inebriated state allegedly attempted to set a policewoman and her colleague on fire in Pune city, police said on Saturday.

A soldier was killed in an encounter with terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir's Kulgam district on Saturday, officials said. They said security personnel were conducting a cordon-and-search operation in Modergam village of the south Kashmir district when the terrorists opened fire at them. The officials said the soldier of the Indian Army sustained injuries in the exchange of fire and died. The operation is underway and further details are awaited, they added.

Opposition Congress and Shiv Sena (UBT) in Maharashtra have raised question marks over the Eknath Shinde-led dispensation's announcement of giving Rs 11 crore reward to the T20 World Cup-winning Indian team, and alleged that by doing so, the government wants to pat itself on the back. The opposition parties said that while they were proud of the cricketers' achievement, there was no need to give Rs 11 crore from the state coffers and asked the chief minister to pay the amount from his own pocket.

One person was killed and 17 were injured when two buses overturned and one fell into a roadside ditch in Muzaffarnagar, police said on Saturday. The incident took place near Bhagenla checkpost on the Delhi-Dehradun national highway under Kotwali police station area, they said.

Three people died and five were injured after two cars collided head-on on the outskirts of the district headquarters town of Shivamogga on Saturday morning, police said. Of the five injured, one is in a critical condition, they added.

The development board of the Marda Jagannath temple, near Mathura in Odisha's Ganjam district has sought financial assistance from the state government for performing the daily rituals and maintenance of the over 300-year-old temple, an official said.

Coaches of an express train running between Nashik district and Mumbai got uncoupled at Kasara in neighbouring Thane on Saturday morning, in which no passenger was hurt, a railway official said. The train resumed its journey after 40 minutes when the coaches were re-attached, he said.

Assam's flood situation remained critical on Saturday with over 24.50 lakh people reeling under the deluge in 30 districts and major rivers flowing above the danger mark at several places, an official bulletin said.

The health condition of former Railway minister Mukul Roy, who was admitted to a hospital a couple of days back following a fall at his residence, is "critical", an official of the medical establishment said on Saturday. Roy, who got injured in the fall, is still in the Intensive Care Unit at the hospital, he said.

Kerala's first paediatric liver transplantation was done in Government Medical College Hospital in Kottayam district. The surgery was performed on a five-year-old child suffering from liver-related ailments, Health Minister Veena George said in a statement on Saturday.

A fire broke out in a shop located in the Civil Lines area in Ludhiana on Saturday, said officials. There was no report of any casualty.

Three siblings were killed here in Sikri village when their house's eaves collapsed while they were sitting under it, police said on Saturday. Police said the eaves, commonly called 'chhajja', was not in a good condition and it collapsed after rain in the area.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin on Saturday expressed shock over the murder of Bahujan Samaj Party Tamil Nadu president K Armstrong and said those involved in his killing have been arrested in a midnight operation. The chief minister said he was shocked and anguished over Armstrong's death.

Mangaluru International Airport has commenced international cargo operations from its integrated cargo terminal with flight IX 815 ferrying 2,522 kgs of fruits and vegetables to Abu Dhabi, officials said on Saturday. The formal launch was done on Friday, in the presence of the AAHL Cargo team, the leadership team of the Mangaluru International Airport as well as representatives from Customs, Airlines - IndiGo and Air India Express - and Airport Security Group of CISF, they said.

The Amarnath Yatra was temporarily suspended on both routes to the cave shrine on Saturday as a precautionary measure due to heavy rainfall, officials said. Intermittent heavy rainfall has been seen along the Baltal and Pahalgam routes since last night, they said.

In a first video statement after the July 2 stampede at a satsang in Uttar Pradesh’s Hathras which claimed the lives of over 120 people, Surajpal, also known as 'Bhole Baba', said that he is “deeply saddened” after the incident and expressed confidence that the “miscreants” will not be spared. He said that he has urged the members of the committee to stand with the bereaved families and the injured. “I am deeply saddened after the incident of July 2. May God give us the strength to bear this pain. Please keep faith in the government and the administration. I have faith that anyone who created the chaos would not be spared... Through my lawyer AP Singh, I have requested the members of the committee to stand with the bereaved families and the injured and help them throughout their lives,” Surajpal said.
