    Sonia slams 'blatantly misogynist' question in CBSE exam

    Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Monday condemned the inclusion of a "blatantly misogynist" passage in a CBSE Class 10 question paper and demanded an apology from the Modi government. Raising the issue during Zero Hour, Gandhi demanded immediate withdrawal of the objectionable question and a review into the "gravest lapse". In the Class 10 exam conducted on Saturday, the English question paper carried a comprehension passage with sentences like "emancipation of women destroyed the parent's authority over the children" and "it was only by accepting her husband's way that a mother could gain obedience over the younger ones", among others. Seeking clarification on the issue raised by Gandhi, members of the Congress, DMK, IUML, NCP and National Conference walked out of the House.

    Rajya Sabha proceedings adjourned till 12 noon amid opposition protests

    Rajya Sabha proceedings were adjourned for about 50 minutes till 12 noon on Monday amid opposition protests over the issue of suspension of MPs. Referring to the suspension of 12 opposition party MPs, Leader of the Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge said the government was "adamant" and forcing it to disrupt the House proceedings. Kharge also announced that they will walk out from the House Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu tried to bring order in the House, but opposition members kept raising their point. Naidu then adjourned the proceedings till 12 noon. As many as 12 opposition MPs were suspended from the Rajya Sabha for the entire Winter session of Parliament for their "unruly" conduct in the previous session in August. The Opposition has termed the suspension as "undemocratic and in violation of all the Rules of Procedure" of the Upper House.

    Actor-model Harnaaz Sandhu made history on Monday as she was crowned Miss Universe 2021 -- beating contestants from 80 countries -- 21 years after India last brought home the title. Only two Indians before Sandhu have won the title of Miss Universe - actors Sushmita Sen in 1994 and Lara Dutta in 2000. The 70th edition of the event was held in Eilat, Israel, where the 21-year-old bagged the coveted pageant. The Chandigarh-based model, who is pursuing her master's degree in public administration, was crowned by her predecessor Andrea Meza of Mexico, who won the pageant in 2020. While Paraguay's Nadia Ferreira, 22, finished second, South Africa's Lalela Mswane, 24, came third.
