New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party has lashed out at Aam Aadmi Party chief minister Arvind Kejriwal for what he said, wasting taxpayers' money by hiking subsidy on power.
BJP leader of opposition Harsh Vardhan said, governments are not run on populist measures alone, and it would harm the future of Delhi.
Harsh Vardhan said, money meants for other welfare schemes will now be spent on increased subsidy. "Instead the government should have forced discoms to lower tariff".
Atul Goyal, who heads an NGO Urja campaigning for lower power tariff, described the AAP government's announcement on power subsidy as nothing but a gimmick.
He said, subsidy was already available to consumers for consumption till 400 units. "They should have waited for the CAG audit of discoms and then taken a decision. What was th hurry?", he said.
"Giving away subsidy means adding more money to the discom accounts", said a resident welfare association leader.
Former Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit says, the AAP government's announcement presents a confusing picture. "He (Kejriwal) is definitely trying to fulfill the promises made in his party manifesto, but only time will tell. Let's see how he does it."
Congress leader Arvinder Singh said, the party would study the AAP government's decision on power subsidy in detail and come out with a detailed response on Wednesday.
