New Delhi: The Delhi units of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Congress met Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung separately on Friday and demanded his intervention into the issue of High Court passing an order to ban e-rickshaws on the national capital roads.
The BJP delegation led by Satish Upadhyay, chief of party's Delhi unit, told reporters that the Central government would bring an ordinance soon to amend the Motor Vehicles Act in order to exclude e-rickshaws from its purview in the city.
“The Centre has already sent its views to the Supreme Court and the High Court on the matter,” he said.
Meanwhile, Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee (DPCC) president Arvinder Singh Lovely said the Central government should immediately bring an ordinance to prevent e-rickshaw drivers from being rendered jobless.
On Thursday, the Delhi High Court had directed the state government to stop e-rickshaws from plying on roads till next hearing after a three-year-old boy died in an accident in Trilokpuri area of east Delhi.
