Bihar minister Parveen Amanullah quits cabinet, JD(U)

Patna: In a setback to Nitish Kumar government in Bihar, Social Welfare minister Parveen Amanullah resigned today from the cabinet.Amanullah send her resignation letter to the Chief Minister.Parveen told reporters that she was finding it

Her husband Afzal Amanullah served as Home Secretary during Kumar's first tenure as CM starting 2005. Later, he left for Delhi to work for Central government. At present he is Director General of Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).

Amanullah told reporters that she had made up mind to resign as minister sometimes back. "But, after the Rajya Sabha elections ended I decided to proceed," she added.

She said she would also resign as MLA.

Resignation of Parveen Amanullah belonging to minority Muslim community is not a good news for Chief Minister Nitish Kumar already facing threats to his popularity in that community from the resurgent RJD President Lalu Prasad.

Asked if resignation from JD(U) indicated she considers the party a "sinking ship", she answered in the negative.

"My good wishes are with JD(U)," she said.

Hesitant to talk much about reasons for resignation, the minister, however, said although she managed to do many things in her department as a minister, she also failed to do many other things she wanted to.

Resignation of Parveen Amanullah as an MLA would spell trouble for the Nitish Kumar government which is surviving with the support of four MLAs of Congress, as many Independents and one CPI. Without her JD(U) will now be left with 117 MLAs including Speaker Udai Narain Chaudhary in the 238-member house.

The strength of the Nitish Kumar Cabinet which was reduced to 18 after dropping of BJP ministers has also come down to 17 which means adding more burden on others.
