New Delhi: The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) on Friday launched an 'anti-spitting' drive in Connaught Place, the heart of the national capital.
The NDMC has deployed four marshals in the area to keep a track of people indulging in spitting and polluting the vicinity. People found in such activities will be fined.
Lok Sabha MP from New Delhi constituency, Meenakshi Lekhi, yesterday started this drive. Speaking on this occasion, she urged the public not to spit at public places as it can spread many respiratory diseases like tuberculosis, bronchitis, pneumonia, and other infections.
The drive includes putting up posters and stickers linking spitting to health problems, especially those related to tobacco consumption and Connaught Place is the first area where the drive will be implemented.
Messages like ‘Don't spit as hundreds die of tuberculosis because spitting spreads the disease', ‘This is your own property', ‘Rs 100 fine for spitting' etc. will soon be visible in the area.
Shakuntala D Gamlin, acting chairperson of NDMC, informed that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's ambitious 'Swachh Bharat Abhiyan', the civic agency has also started a special drive to clean the markets.
Earlier, NDMC had ordered the cleanliness of backlanes of several colonies and areas which attract a high footfall of visitors, like Hanuman Temple road, Sarojini Nagar market, Connaught Place, etc.
With this launch, the civic body aims to intensify its efforts to keep Connaught Place clean.
