Former chief minister Jyoti Basu was very reluctant to be treated in hospital and after being admitted with pneumonia on January 1, the Marxist patriarch was desperate to return home, his personal aide Joykrishna Ghosh said in Kolkata.

"When he was being taken to hospital this time, he was very reluctant to go. He told us not to take him to the hospital, he wanted to be treated at home. I convinced him that it is not possible to bring in all the equipments, particularly heart-related ones, at home," Ghosh told reporters after the stalwart leader's demise.

"Three-four days after being admitted to hospital he became desperate to return home," Basu's personal aide of 33 years, said.

"He used to tell me and Dr Maity to take him home. Basu used to say that they (doctors) are giving him a lot of trouble, lot of injections," Ghosh said.

Recalling his long association with Basu and even accompanying him abroad since 1977, Ghosh said, "It feels like I have lost my father for a second time". Ever since Basu shifted to Indira Bhavan, his official residence while he was chief minister, Ghosh was like his shadow.

"I used to stay at the hospital from morning till night. I could not go to the party office, neither could meet my relatives," he said. PTI
