There's a ray of hope for Salman Pasha (16) who weighs 165 kg. After visiting several hospitals for weight-loss treatment, a city hospital will now treat him for free, reports Mid Day.
Salman Pasha (16) had little idea that he'd stand to gain kilos, that too, from a dose of bad medicine.
Grappling with a weight of 165 kg, Salman's family ran from pillar to post to no avail, until he finally landed at St Philomena Hospital, which agreed to treat him, free of cost.
There's hope at long last for the teenager, who has managed to lose 30 kg now.
Salman started gaining weight when he was a 10-year-old. His troubles worsened when he started taking an herbal course from a quack in Basavanagudi.
Following this, the weight problem accelerated at an alarming rate.
His mother Rehana (35), a housewife, told MiD DAY, "The herbal medicine had a reverse effect on him. He had taken that course for about six months.
It became so bad, that he had trouble walking around, and breathing. We took him to many hospitals but to no avail. He also refused to go to school because his classmates started calling him 'motu'.
"People think that he eats a lot, but that's not the fact. He eats two to three chapatis for breakfast, and a small quantity of rice for lunch.
"I want to be like other boys. I want to go back to school, and hope it will happen very soon," Salman said.
"My husband Adil Pasha (47), fractured his right hand in an accident two years ago, and is not in a position to earn money. We even spent the advance amount of Rs 15,000 of our rented house on Salman," says Rehana.
Dr J Anand, consultant, General and Laproscopic surgery, St Philomena's Hospital said, "It is understood that this is primary obesity, and needs surgery. The surgery will be done after reducing his weight by another 8-10 kg.
We have put him on a liquid diet, which he will have to continue even after the surgery. Everything, including his heart, is normal. He is also under going physiotherapy. Earlier he was unable to sleep because of this."
