Jorhat, Assam, July 18: A baby elephant which strayed from a jungle in gibbon wildlife sanctuary in Jorhat district was hit by a train on Monday night.
As the baby elephant screamed in pain, local villagers went to the spot and tried to pull the animal from a mudhole.
Nearly 14 hours later, two doctors from the Kaziranga National Park went to the spot, administered two injections to give the baby elephant strength, and left the animal to lie there in the mudhole.
Forest employees did not even move to help the baby elephant. They were busy speaking on their cellphones.
Ultimately, villagers used ropes and pulled the baby elephant from out of the mudhole, and offered the animal sugarcane.
The animal was still lying at the spot till Tuesday night. A team of doctors is expected to arrive from Guwahati later for the animal's treatment.
