Hargobind Khorana
An Indian-American biochemist, Hargobind Khorana, won the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine 1968 and shared it with Marshall W. Nirenberg and Robert W. Holley for research that helped to show how the order of nucleotides in nucleic acids.
Born in Raipur, Hargobind Khorana left India in 1945 and became a naturalized citizen of the United States in 1966. He also received the National Medal of Science the same year.
He was also a member of the Board of Scientific Governors at The Scripps Research Institute.
He continued to head a laboratory at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the United States, until his death in 2011.
