Ustad Bismillah Khan: He was born on March 21, 1913 in Bihar's Dumraon and often referred to by the honorific title Ustad.

He was credited with popularising the shehnai. Though Khan was not born in Varanasi, the shehnai maestro made the narrows lanes of the city his home from a very young age.

He was awarded India's highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna, in 2001.

Ustad was one of the finest musicians in post-independent Indian classical music and one of the best examples of Hindu-Muslim unity in India. He played the shehnai to audiences across the world.

Ustad was the third classical musician after MS Subbulakshmi and Ravi Shankar to be accorded this distinction.
