An earthquake of magnitude 4.0 struck Assam's Nagaon on Sunday evening, informed the National Center for Seismology. The earthquake took place at 4:18 pm, NCS.
There was no immediate report of any loss of life or damage to property, an official bulletin said. It also said the depth of the quake was 10 km.
"An earthquake of magnitude 4.0 on the Richter scale occurred at 1618 hours in Nagaon, Assam today," NCS said on Twitter.
People in the neighbouring West Karbi Anglong, Karbi Anglong, Golaghat and Morigaon districts also felt the tremor, besides those in Sonitpur on the northern bank of the Brahmaputra river.
The epicentre was around 160 km east of Guwahati, near Hojai in central Assam. The northeastern states fall in the high seismic zone, and earthquakes frequently hit the region.
Earlier this month, an earthquake of 4.0 magnitude hit Manipur's Ukhrul, the National Center for Seismology (NCS) informed. The earthquake occurred at 6.14 am on February 4, the NCS said.
