Jodhpur: The twists in self-styled godman Asaram Bapu's case never cease to suprise, with the country's topnotch advocate Ram Jethmalani telling the Rajasthan High Court that the sexual assault victim was afflicted with a "chronic" disease that attracts a woman to a man.
The prosecution said Jethmalani offered no evidence to back his claim.
Justice Nirmaljit Kaur who was hearing Jethmalani's plea for bail to Asaram Bapu silenced the advocate by asking: Are you arguing on the case trial or on the bail application?
Jethmalani said, the victim has levelled allegations at the behest of somebody. "She is a mental patient. The charges of sexual assault inside the cottage are baseless."
The judge then said: "What is the basis for what you are saying? If the victim is levelling false charges then tell us at whose instance and why?"
Jethmalani then said: "The girl is an adult. Why didn't the Jodhpur police go to Shahjahanpur municipality where she was born? Police could have obtained her birth records. She was shown underage by two years in school."
