New Delhi, May 24: An Indian Army major was killed and another major was critically injured when an Army Aviation Cheetah helicopter crashed a short distance away from the Bhim Post helipad in Siachen glacier on Wednesday, army officials said.
Col. Jagdeep Dahiya, PRO, Indian Army, said: "There were two Army Aviation Cheetah choppers which were returning after a routine maintenance flight from the Bhim Post.
"The Bhim Post is at the height of approximately 6000 metres and its located in the northern part of the Siachen glacier.
"On their return journey one helicopter crashed, a short distance away from the helipad and there has been unfortunate casualty of one pilot.
"It was being piloted by two majors and the second Major was critically injured and he has been evacuated."
Col Dahiya said, the reason for the crash is yet to be ascertained and it would be known after a court of inquiry.
Meanwhile the Army Aviation Corps has ordered an inquiry.
