Chennai: Madras High Court yesterday granted an anticipatory bail to a DMDK legislator in an alleged theft case.
Justice R Mala, who was hearing a criminal original petition filed by D Anagai Murugesan, the Anagaputtur MLA, granted anticipatory bail on condition that the MLA furnish a personal bail bond worth Rs 10,000 and two other sureties for like sum in the event of his arrest.
The judge also directed him to appear before the police authorities concerned as and when required.
Based on the complaint by one Ashok Kumar, police had lodged a FIR against Murugesan and R Valapirai Chozhan for an offence of theft of a gold chain.
Murugesan and Chozhan went to a hotel in Chromepet for a snack, where Kumar was staying. Just after they left, Kumar complained to the hotel management of losing a gold chain and suspected the duo of stealing it.
The management informed police who filed a complaint in this regard. But later when Murugesan and Chozhan came to the hotel, they came to know that the lost chain was found by Kumar, who also withdrew his complaint.
But, however, police refused to close the case, since they had already lodged an FIR.
Fearing arrest, Murugesan and Chozhan moved Madras High Court with their anticipatory bail applications. They submitted that the complaint against them was false with a view to harass them and bring disrepute to their political party.
