New Delhi: The Union government is examining the authenticity of reports emerging from various sources that former Union Minister Matang Sinh and former Home Secretary Anil Goswami had a powerful nexus between them.
The present government is probing if they had any hand in the appointment of other senior official like A.P Singh and Ranjit Sinha as the directors of Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) during the tenure of previous UPA government.
According to intelligence report received by the government, just hours beforehe was arrested, Matang Sinh shifted some crucial belongings to the official residence of ex-home secretary. The government is waiting for more reports before it decides to take further action in this regard.
According to some media reports, a number of top officials of the government would make a beeline for Sinh's residence near Gole Market, whenever he was in town, to seek favours from him. They also said that Sinh had a major role when it came to the appointment of various top officials in various departments.
There have been such instances like the appointments of director generals of para-military organisations, a senior functionary of the Central Vigilance Commission and at least two members of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) in addition to a Governor.
Two high profile advisers to the ministry are said to be their appointees, as also an important functionary in the Civil Aviation Ministry.
The government is establishing the identity of officers who frequently visited Matang Sinh's residence to seek favours or to get their service records straightened up.
In this matter, some files connected with the clearances given by the Vigilance Commission to dubious officials are likely to be re-examined. A top official said that there is a "can of worms once an independent inquiry gets initiated".
