Mumbai : Gujarat-based Amul Dairy yesterday inaugurated a milk processing unit with a capacity of one million litres per day in Thane district, to meet the rising demand of fresh milk and dairy products here. “We have invited Amul Dairy to set up more such dairies in Vidharbha and Konkan region, which is still underdeveloped,” Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan said after the inauguration ceremony.
The state government has already setting up dairies in partnership with Mother Dairy in Marathwada region, he added.
Amul Dairy, registered as the Kaira District Co-operative Milk Producers Union Limited (KDCMPUL), pioneered in the cooperative movement in the country. It was set up in 1946. The new plant ‘Amul Virar Dairy' set up with an investment of Rs 180 crore was unveiled by Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar and Chavan.
Noting that the country is a leading milk producer in the world, Pawar shared that the Centre has launched a national dairy plan to boost milk production.
