Several freedom fighters including Nehru and Pandit Govind Ballabh Pant were jailed here during the freedom movement of India.
The prison is in a dilapidated condition, with water leaking inside Nehru's cell coupled with broken glass and windows.
Says Joshi: “Many Indian revolutionaries have been lodged in this jail and that is why it is so important. It saddens me to say that the prison is yet to be declared a national heritage even after a lot of talk on the issue.
"The utensils, which Nehru used in his ward, are also in ruins. If nothing is done to restore the prison, it would get completely ruined,” said Ramesh Joshi.
“We have a special ward in the prison, that is dedicated to India's first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru. He was lodged in the jail two times and had spent considerable time here, making it historically famous,” Arya said.
