Sangrur, May 7: Several persons, including six police personnel, were injured after a protest by university students yesterday turned violent as agitators ransacked and set ablaze several vehicles and a portion of the varsity's building.
Students of deemed university Sant Longowal Institute of Engineering and Technology in Longowal city here ransacked the administrative block and smashed window panes of several vehicles, including the institute director's car.
The students smashed about a half dozen each of the computer sets and air conditioners, officials said here.
When police tried to disperse agitating students using baton charge, students retaliated by pelting stones leading to a clash between police and students.
SSP Mandip Singh said about six police personnel were injured after students attacked them with stones and bricks.
Two police personals along with a student and the dean of the institution Dhiraj Sood had to be rushed to Sangrur civil hospital, he said.
Students had been protesting over poor quality of food being served at the institute's hostel and some other administrative issues for past several days.
The situation took an ugly turn yesterday when the agitating students entered into an heated argument with the institute's director.
The cops had to burst tear gas shells to disperse the students.
