Mumbai, Jun 27: In fresh trouble for Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray, state Advocate General (AG) has allowed initiation of contempt proceedings against him for allegedly referring to a Bombay High Court decision as a ‘partisan decision'.

“I hereby grant consent under Section 15 (1)(b) of the Contempt of Courts act to initiate contempt proceedings against (Raj Thackeray),” read the letter signed by AG D J Khambata.

City-based advocate Ejaz Naqvi had recently written to the AG seeking his mandatory consent to initiate contempt proceedings against Thackeray after he allegedly referred the decision of the Bombay High Court as ‘partisan decision'.

On February 5, the Bombay High Court had rejected the petition filed by MNS which sought to hold a political rally at Shivaji Park, in central Mumbai. The High Court had rejected the petition on the ground that the venue fell under the silence zone.

Naqvi in his letter to the AG had alleged thatThackeray, in his speech, had referred to the decision of the Bombay High court partisan decision.

“The aforesaid remark scandalises the high court and tends to lower its authority and dignity. The remark cast an unwarranted aspersion of partiality against the Bombay High Court”, the letter read.

“Since I have got the mandatory consent, I will file a contempt of court petition against Raj Thackeray”, Naqvi said.  Raj Thackeray was unavailable for comment.
