Lucknow: An additional rehabilitation package of Rs 5 lakh each has been sanctioned for the 1984 Sikh riot victims, an official spokesman said.
In pursuance of the recommendations of Nanavati commission, the family of each of the 1984 Sikh riot victims had got Rs 3.50 lakh as monetary help and now they will get an additional Rs 5 lakh as rehabilitation package, a release quoting a home department spokesman said.
The package is extended for all the members of the victim families, even if they were not the breadwinners, it said.
Instructions to this effect have been received from the central government, the spokesman said.
The riots that followed assassination of the then prime minister Indira Gandhi on October 31, 1984 killed 3,325 people.
Of them, Delhi alone accounted for 2,733 and the rest deaths were in Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and other states.
