On the second anniversary of the revocation of Jammu and Kashmir's special status, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that abrogation of Article 370 has brought unprecedented peace and progress in the region. The Modi government had abrogated Article 370 and bifurcated Jammu and Kashmir into two Union Territories -- Jammu and Kashmir division and Ladakh division on August 5, 2019.

According to the government's claim, terrorist violence in Jammu and Kashmir has reduced significantly after the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019. Union Minister of State for Home G Kishan Reddy said in the Lok Sabha that 244 terror incidents were reported in Jammu and Kashmir in 2020 in comparison to 594 in 2019, while 221 terrorists were killed in 2020 in comparison to 157 in 2019. Till February 2021, 15 terror incidents occurred in the Union Territory in which eight terrorists were killed.
Meanwhile, PDP president Mehbooba Mufti has said that people had no choice but to "resist to exist" when "gross injustice" is heaped on them. "No words or pictures are enough to depict the pain, torment & upheaval inflicted upon J&K on this black day two years ago. When unbridled oppression is unleashed & gross injustice heaped there is no other choice but to resist to exist," the former Jammu and Kashmir CM said in a tweet.
Mufti and her PDP have been very vocal in their opposition to the Centre's move two years ago. Other mainstream political parties also have taken a public stand against the revocation of the special status but have given more importance to the restoration of statehood.
