Muzaffarnagar (UP), July 11: Fourteen members of a family returning from a wedding were burned to death when the Maruti van they were traveling in caught fire in Kandla near Shamli (Prabuddha Nagar) on Tuesday evening. The dead included 10 children.
Police said, the Maruti van was being run on LPG cylinder and it caught fire due to a short circuit.
The LPG cylinder exploded, turning the minivan into a ball of fire and trapping the passengers inside.
The accident took place late Tuesday night near Shamli (Prabudha Nagar).
Police said the van was carrying 20 passengers and was returning after attending a marriage ceremony. The six surviving passengers were injured. They have been admitted to Guru Tegh Bahadur Hospital, Delhi.
The van driver Ghaffar somehow survived and he brought the survivors to Delhi hospital.
The family lived in Loni, Ghaziabad and was returning from a wedding in Shamli.
Shamli and Baghpat police lost precious time in quarreling over the jurisdiction in which the mishap occured.
