Srinagar, Nov 12: With a video of Muslim youths allegedly being converted to Christianity surfacing on internet, Hurriyat chairman Mirwaiz Umer Farooq on Friday said a committee has been formed to look into the incident.
“It (conversion of youth to Christianity) is a grave issue. Being the religious head, I am fully aware of my responsibilities...A committee has been formed and assigned the job to collect all details,” Mirwaiz said addressing a Friday congregation at historic Jamia Masjid here.
The statement comes nearly a fortnight after police registered a case against “unknown” persons when a video purportedly showing the alleged conversion of Muslim youths surfaced on various social networking sites.
“I am not unaware of this grave problem. Contacts were established with active Christian missionaries,” Mirwaiz said, adding that a meeting of religious heads is being convened shortly to deliberate on the issue.
Police had registered a case on October 31 following complaints that youths were being allegedly lured away to forcibly convert their religion.
Last month, a Shariat court had issued a notice to a pastor on an alleged conversion at a church here.
