Muslim women across the country on Tuesday welcomed the landmark verdict by the Supreme Court that struck down the practice of instant triple talaq among Muslims. The Supreme Court judgement that declared the practice of divorce through triple talaq, they said, has given new hope to Muslim women.

Shayara Bano, a victim of the practice who reached the Supreme Court to appeal against it, said this is a historic day for Muslim women.

"I welcome this verdict. This is a historic day for Muslim women. The condition of Muslim women should be understood and a legislation should be formed soon," she said.

Another petitioner Farah Faiz, who is also a lawyer, said the government should follow up on this verdict with the same enthusiasm as they did in the court.

"The government filed an affidavit in the Supreme Court opposing the practice. The government should now bring a legislation with the same enthusiasm and must not wait for 2019 election," she told India TV.

Women across the country celebrated the judgement and also raised slogans hailing the Supreme Court and the Constitution.

The All India Muslim Women Personal Law Board welcomed the Supreme Court judgement, terming it as a victory of Islam and Muslim women in the country.

"The Supreme Court decision is historic, it is the victory of women in the country. But more than that, it is the victory of Islam," said President of the All India Muslim Women Personal Law Board Shaista Amber, who has been fighting for the rights of Muslim women.
